My first light animation (DMX) involved a sixty foot river on the side of my driveway featuring salmon swimming uphill set to the tune of Dance of the Sugar Plum fairy. (Why, you may ask? Well we live in a temperate rain forest - it's often pouring rain at Christmas - and we have lots of rivers nearby. And the salmon? When spawning, sockeye salmon turn red and green as they swim upriver to spawn, which just happen to be nice Christmas colors.) Here's a video from my 2012 show showing only those DMX elements - I don't have a video of the full display:
https://vimeo.com/56966182When I added my megatree last year, I thought I should incorporate salmon elements in it, which is why you'll see the swimming salmon up, down & around the tree - you'll probably want to re-sequence those sections but I've provided the gifs, so you can see what it looks like on the preview. The pixels display is meant to accompany, not overshadow, the DMX show so there are a few fairly static sections - again you'll probably want to liven up those sections.
For completeness, my 2014 display consists about 12K channels: 1 megatree, 2 stars, 2 starbursts, 2 sets of arches, soffit lights, deck lights, and various DMX elements, including the aforementioned salmon.
