Title: Any Limit
Post by: Lights On Fifth on June 13, 2015, 08:11:17 AM
Does anyone know if there is a limit of A\C channels that can be used with Xlights, I have had some inquiries, I amusing 160 as of right now but some people have have quite a few more channels than that and are wondering if Xlights can handle it.

An A/C channel is just another channel to xL4. It is how you get it to your lights either via a USB dongle or a Universe that you need to consider.

I know xLights can handle at least 64 universe of DMX (512ch) giving it at least the capabilities of handling at least 32,768 channels of control be it any type of lights your hardware and power structure can handle. Given that if you run multiple Pi controllers you could take that number up to 64Pis times 32768channels/Pi or a total of 2,097,152 channels of lights. :o

Just think you would have to create 64 sequence files to run a show that big!

I think it may depend on what hardware they are using.  Some users have had problems using the USB dongles and I know I never got around to testing the limits with the LOR USB dongle.  One user appeared to be able to control more channels without lag when using LOR then with xLights and the same dongle.  He switched to DMX and said everything worked great.  So there might be an issue with xLights not being able to achieve the bandwidth it should with the LOR USB dongle but I'm only going on the feedback I've heard.
