I didn't see this posted anywhere, if it is duplicated I apologize.
Windows media player has a visualization addition called Analyzer. Here is a youtube video link,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOYp0FfVE4Q. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOYp0FfVE4Q.)
When you install the analyzer it has several variations to pick from and I would like to see these available in Xlights. Here is the installation link,

Thanks for all the great work put into Xlights, it is awesome.

I think these spectrum effects would look great on my 32 pole light fountain.

Along with a few others would be excelent on a large grid.
Just saying. :)

You can do these types of effects TODAY with the Glediator effect.
Glediator is a free pixel grid/led effects generator. What? How?
1. Install Glediator
2. Create a grid with the X,Y sizes of your model
3. Create effects
4. Capture the effect and save as something.GLED
5. In Nutcracker use the GLED effect and select the something.GLED you just created
Sean created a How-To video here:

I believe that dwetzel is looking at the effect that could be synced to music rather than just having an analyzer type of effect.

I posted this on the FB group as well:
If you've used Glediator, you will probably like Jinx. It has all of the Glediator options plus a few more. Use it just as you would glediator, except save your file as .GLED instead of .OUT I especially like the ability to create effects with audio input via Spectrum Analyzer or VU-Meter.
Jinx can be found at http://www.live-leds.de/ (http://www.live-leds.de/)
Here's a sample I created with the VU-Meter option. www.stevesimages.com/xlights4/vu-meter.gif (http://www.stevesimages.com/xlights4/vu-meter.gif)

Thanks I'll have to give that a try. It will be interesting translating it over to my light fountain that is single channel incan elements.
-
Yes I did want the effect to be linked to the sound file. But I will check out the other options that have been suggested. This is an awesome group and very willing to help. Thank you all.
-
Well the good news is the effect ONLY uses audio for input, so as long as you start the effect at the same point you did the capture you're good to go.

Thanks for posting this Steve !

Hi Steve,
I had a look at this yesterday after this post.
I thought that the spectrum or VU effect on a matrix would look good.
I could not however understand , how to get either of those effects done.
What I tried after reading the manual was to play my MP3 using windows media player.
I then selected one of those effects and expected to see the bars move up and down to the music.
They seemed to be moving up and down slightly even without the music playing.
So I guess I Must be missing a step where I start a capture when the song plays or when it reaches the point that I then want to play as an effect . and then stop after say 4 bars.
A few steps ie the idiots guide to doing this would be appreciated.

Windows>Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Manage Audio Devices > Recording
The active device is what Jinx will use. I was lucky enough that my audio card allows for loopback, meaning it can play a sound out and loop that sound back in digitally for processing.
If you can't do that, you can use your speakers for output and the microphone for input.
Adjust the sensitivity in Jinx. Audio VU Meter> Edit> Gain. The effect is real-time so you can set the sensitivity easily.
That's all there is to it.

Thanks Steve,
I will try that Tom as soon as I get back home - am at my in laws and being told off by my better half for being unsociable :)

Steve is correct.
Microsoft removed the ability to loop the audio output back to the audio input of it's audio manager.
There are several solutions to this however.
One is like steve and that is to have an audio card that supports that loopback capability.
Two is to use the Mic/speaker but that can pick up spurious noise sometimes even in a very quiet room.
The final way is to use a software solution called a virtual cable.
I purchased the following program very successfully.
Virtual Audio Cable
http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.htm (http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.htm)
I use small batch programs to enable and disable the program.
There is a small learning curve but with a little computer savvy and a couple of video how tos it works great.
I also found another virtual cable program that is donation ware but have not tried it yet.
VB-Audio Virtual Apps
http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Cable/ (http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Cable/)
I have downloaded it but not tested it's capabilities yet.
Hope that helps

Did you ever get this to work?
I like the analyzer / equalizer effect too, and would be great to have that on verticals to the beat. I tried briefly in Jinx, but the equalizer was triggering on a lot more than the beat within the song (which is what I was trying to do).
Sounds like a great effect in nutcracker! I tried using existing effects, but couldn't get the accuracy of the beats to work out (single strand, spirals, etc.).

I haven't tried to use Jinx but I did take a quick look at it's spectrum analyzer effect. It's going to respond across a wide frequency range. The beats you are looking for should show up in the left side where the lower frequencies reside. In between the beats you will still see action in the mids and highs. I kinda like how Brian accomplished this in SuperStar where you could map strings to a selection of frequency ranges so you could make them all respond to only the lows if you wanted. I think we will eventually have some spectrum analysis capabilities but unless someone else works on it I don't see it happening this year.

Was able to get a somewhat similar function for the verticals I was using. This wouldn't really work on a matrix, but thought I'd share:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os62p4mF2-U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os62p4mF2-U)
Essentially curtain Open, using repeat and using Green and Red. Swag speed matched number of beats. And used repeat

Most of it . I was able to import some of the effects , but not the VU/spectrum effect properly.
Then I got side tracked into doing other stuff ie on the BBB and P10 panels . This is on my to do list and hopefully will get back to it soon.

Bumping...
It sure would be nice to have some kind of spectrum analyzer effect that uses the audio that correlates to the timing of the effect. I know that Gled/Jinx can do the effects, but trying to get the sync right is anything but easy.
