In attempting to move work between my laptop and desktop I lost all of the models I had drawn and saved on my laptop. I always liked LOR, because the saved sequence had everything but the music file saved. So when I saved to a sd card to usb stick and opened it on my laptop I just had to tell LOR where the music was. Also when I was traded or given a sequence I could see the layout it was made for and could pick and choose what parts I would use. I know I got advice recently but I screwed it up. Also we need a way to tell the sequence where the music file is after the sequence is created. I try to load my sequence and I have a error when it attempts to find the music file, because my labels are different on my laptop. I know I should have the same layout on both but I haven't gotten there yet. Is there a tutorial I can review to get this to work I really don't have time to redo stuff.

Hi Jim
One of the great things about NC is that we can share sequences and it doesn't matter that our layouts or models are different. The decoupling of the sequence and the layout is a great feature.
To get your layout between multiple computers, you just need to copy the xlights_rgbeffects.xml file found in your show directory which is found on the setup tab.
To find the audio reference open a sequence, go to settings, sequence settings and the information will be right there on the Info/Media tab.
Cheers,
Steve

The other great part of having the models separate from the sequence is that if you have 20 sequences and decide to change an element you don't have to make that change in each and every one of those sequences.
You just have to change the model configuration and it is then changed in all of your sequences. You may have to load and re-render it but that is less time consuming to have to change the elements specification in each sequence.

ok does it by chance have a history where I might find my lost models?
-
Do you do regular backups? If so you could go back into one of those backup files and extract them from a previous xlights_rgbeffects.xml file.
-
You said you were moving stuff between your desktop and laptop so it's hard for us to guess where you left your good copies of the files. Were you using version 4.1.12? The older versions had an issue where the models got deleted that's why we always tell you to backup the directory. Those backups are your "history".

no nothing in the back ups did not do them all the time so I will just remake them. I went out and tested my lights, coro flake and coro star and found I had the models wrong anyway. Thank you for the help.

moved the files via usb still no models

bumping maybe I want to move my layout not just a model...is that a different file? I tried what was suggested and it did not work.

You need xlights_* , your seq xml files and your mp3 files at least for it to work.
If you imported stuff , you would need to iseq files too.
You could simply , copy your whole show directory across to you new computer .
Or create a different show directory there , and copy everything from under the old one to the new one , then when you open xlights , change the show and media to point to the new location.
then render / save to create the fseq again.
I have done this and on my laptop I have a D drive and difff user , on my desktop (backup) its a C drive and diff user and it has worked.

ok thank you

Well no matter what I have done I cannot get the models and layout to show up on my laptop, including copying the show directory from the desk top to the laptop. I deleted x-lights on my laptop and reinstalled it, then copied the show directory. I restarted x-lights and its not there. I know there is something I am missing are there any other suggestions?

When you say you cant see your layout, is the screen blank ?
Were you by chance using a second monitor on your laptop (source) ?
On your desktop( destination) , if you create a new model , does it appear on the layout screen ?
-
Your models, layout, presets are all in the xlights_rgbeffects.xml file.
Find that file on your computer, open it with Wordpad, Notepad or Notepad++ to see that you can read the model names, etc.
Once you've found a good version of that file, put it your show folder and restart xLights.
If you can't find one, a copy is created each time you press F10 and it's zipped up in your show folder. If for some reason you never did File, Backup or just hit F10, then there's an ever so small chance that xLights perhaps crashed in the past. In that case there's a zip file in the show folder as well that contains the crash debug info along with that xml file.
It's there, you just have to find it.

When you start xLights on the new computer did you change the Show folder to where you copied the files?
-
Gerry , Layout section had no models and when I open the sequence no models are found.
Grilock , I left it in the same file default spot x-lights wanted to go. c-program files- x86- x lights. I opened the rgbeffects XML file and it has all my model s listed, 10 3 channel mini trees, a mega tree , 2 coro flakes and one coro star. I copied that file into the x lights show directory. Still no layout and no models.....
Ok worked it out.....I had the show folder as " c-program files- x86- x lights " when I created a new show folder outside of x lights " on the desk top" and placed the show file from my desk top in it, I now have models. Thank you for your assistance but as usual it was operator error.

It was the ole forest for the trees syndrome.
Good you figured it out. When one does that it sticks in the ole grey matter much better. LOL

Perhaps use diredtories and sub directiries in My Dicuments, because at some stage you will want to park stuff that you have completed or are working on , or have imported etc and sub directories within the show directory are quite useful.
