Title: Matrix Faces Effect
Post by: tindivall on August 07, 2015, 02:31:37 PM
is there a tutorial video or write up anywhere on how to properly use this effect?

I looked at the papagayo write up http://nutcracker123.com/nutcracker/releases/Papagayo%20to%20Nutcracker%20Step%20by%20Step%20w_Papa%20Assist.10.12.2014.pdf

However 1 that is for the old version of xlights and 2 seems to be about the Coro Face effect.

Can I do Matrix Faces in like fashion?

Yeah I have seen that video and it is great... for coro faces. But as you say in the video Matrix not currently a part of that future release and no estimate when they are.  I am working on Halloween display and would like to figure out how to do Matrix faces.

If these feature gets added in the future GREAT.

Well, kind of both.    The video shows how the sequencing will be done.  My goal is to try and make it so that there is no difference between sequencing for a Coro faces as compared to sequencing for a matrix face.   The only difference is the "setup" as to how a face is defined.   With what  we have in the git repo today, there no longer are two separate effects (CoroFaces and Faces) as I've merged them together into one that can handle coro style with one channel/node per face segment, coro with mutliple nodes/pixels per face segment, the old face rendered on a matrix, and matrix images.    The screenshots at the bottom show the setup for the matrix and coro+ranges that were not there for the video.

I made another video to show the Matrix Faces feature Dan got working today.  It's really cool.  I did discover a bug I need to fix at around 6:55.  In the code I forgot to unselect effects first before selecting the effects below the phrase to delete so you can see it delete the words under the other phrase which came as a surprise to me in the video.  I've found the issue and I'm fixing it now.  Also seemed like some weird stuff got into the audio between 10:45 and 11:15...you'll think it's a Ghosthunters episode. :)

Thanks for that video Gil and even enjoyed the ghost visit that you mentioned :P

This is off topic of my original post, but question, is there no way to import timing marks from audacity anymore?

If I do a new sequence and import the .txt file that looks like:

0.000000   0.000000   Start
0.899767   0.899767
1.536615   1.536615
14.483913   14.483913
14.922111   14.922111
15.576487   15.576487

Xlights creates that timing track but the timing marks are not there.

I ask because for the faces I find it easier to break the lyrics down there more so than I do trying to use xlights and would like to be able to import those over once done.

Are you trying to Import the timing as part of the new sequence wizard or later after you establish the sequence?  I just tried it using the wizard and it's crashing.  I think that's gotten broken and fixed 2 or 3 times now.  If you create the sequence and then go back into sequence settings and import the timing it should work.

was trying as I was creating a new sequence.. I will try after the fact.

Ok just checked in the fix.  I seem to remember Steve telling me about this bug at the Expo.  From looking at the code the timing import during the new sequence wizard got broken this time when we switched all our timing representations from floating point to integers so it's been there for a few months.

As a follow up I did an import of the timing after the fact and no issues there!

I should just rename this post to Tindivall's questions :P

Is there a way once you have already started a sequence to go back in and add a vamp timing track or can those only be done at the start?

Yes. Go to the Settings / timing anytime and you can add new Vamp timings

Gil
Did you build the Snowman faces or is it available elsewhere?

i made the snowman faces 2 years ago.

I made a video about this a few years ago also (one of the 100). Prob easier to redo the video to show the method.

1) Pick any image (tree, snowman, olaf). Size image to arounf 50x50. Pick images with just a few colors, our matrixes do not have that great a reolution. Exception to this is if you have a 30K channel P10 matrix, then you can do highe rresolution.
2) Make 10 versions of the file.
10 phonemes , each file is named so you know what phoneme it contains.

3) Start with background image and then pate eyes and mouths to each.

Here is an example of the 10 mouth phonemes from Pagayo and the snowman (Whcih i named tree for some reason 2 years ago). People who are more artistic than myself could make more images.
