can we increase the default size limitation on the xml back up??
all of my xml files are greater that 20meg
most are larger than 50meg
I would like it to just back up all of the xml files no matter how large they are

Thanks

What the heck are you doing to create files that big? My sequences are barely 250KB for the XML files. You must be importing from another program which creates a bunch of tiny effects and is very inefficient. You know it's pretty easy backup your show directory without using xLights to do it.

Hi Gil,
I do back up the files now. If I had a wish it would be that the F10 key would back up the xml file I am presently working on no matter how larger and the file\backup command would back up all of the xml files no matter how large.
I do a lot of importing and running 36 Universes and there is allot of detail. That happens when you are picky :o

I've seen a few of my imports of lms files grow the size of my xml. I was shocked when I saw my first 1.5MB file!! I have about 72k channels in my setup because of the p10 panels I have.
I'd love to see a few of your sequences and the detail you have in them. Must be spectacular!!

This is my play list from last year
what I am doing this year has more but this will give you some idea

It's the importing thats creating a huge file. I would just import as a data layer because you don't have the time to edit 50,000 effects. There's a reason there is a file size limit. If you have needs above our limit then your on your own. Its not typical to be creating files that big.
-
I guess I am doing something wrong
I thought I was importing as a data layer.
-
I'm really debating about ToySack and paying for the sup file. Did you ever add any nutcracker effects or other RGB elements to that sequence at all?
-
I guess I am doing something wrong
I thought I was importing as a data layer.
Once I "Convert to Effect" from my data layer and then cut/paste that into other elements in my display (because that's how I use other peoples 16 and 32 channel LOR files and build from there) thats when my xml file grows like crazy. I never keep them just as a data layer along side the iseq file. Once i'm done my import and convert to effects then I typically delete the data layer in my sequence setting. I suppose I should just always start a sequence from scratch and figure out the timing marks all on my own, but others have done a really good job already so I try not to re-invent the wheel.
So....I know why my files are hovering around the 1-2MB in size range which is 20% of the limit that is in play here. I'm sure there are better ways to do this, but that's how I approach things.

I really dont understand how you are getting such big files. I have 33,000 channels, 50 models. I have a tests equence that put a different effect one very model, every second. That is 12,000 cells of effects.
The sequence xml is 1.6mbytes.
My normal sequences are all under 1 mbyte.
What do you mean "Convert to Effect"?
You create a new sequence and
1) Import data as a data layer.
-or-
2) Use "Import, Import Effects" to change your LOR/LSP/Vixen effects into xLights effects/
You never use the CONVERT tab for anything in that process.
-
I don't use the convert tab...see the screen shot..... and for the record my xml files hover in the 1-1.5MB size when I do this, otherwise they are a few hundred kB. It's the OP who had the monster large files.

Sean I really want to understand more about this but I am out of time. my big show is this Friday. when doing this just inside LOR my file sizes were 700-900 megs now that is huge.
my question to you today is will the scheduler run with xml files up to 60 megs and fseq files up to 98 megs
If it will I need to proceed as I have and then in Jan we can have a great discussion.

The problem is you guys are taking raw data and trying to reverse engineer it back into effects and that's the most inefficient way to create effects. You really just need to ditch LOR.
-
OK smarty pants 8) 8)
Yes you are right
But the are really good sequence makers like Brian Bruderer
And some of his work you just cant do in xlights right now. So to be able to get good sequences into xl and then rap their work with my own makes a good to very good sequence.
I made "Mary did you know" on my own it has only 197k xlm and 61 meg fseq file. Nothing on the CCR bars.
So I know it can be done.
When I post what I have done this year which should be in a couple weeks it will make my point more.
I know I am not using importing sup, lms of data files to layers to its best advantage. But as the saying goes it may not be best to change horses in mid stream.
You guys have given me just about enough rope to hang myself.
But the show must gone on.

Import the *.sup file instead of the lms. The resulting sequence will be ten times smaller (and u can edit and adjust if needed). Let me say again: for superstar files do not use lms, use sup files.

What work can you do in SuperStar that xLights can't do?
-
Its not what I can do its what others have done.
I will send you a screen shot video over the next day or two as I go thru these.

I'm really excited about seeing what people end up doing with the new version of xlights. With the strands and many layers of effects and p10 panels I'm hoping that people can create some awesome shows this year.
This sequence I ended up taking a lms file I found and working it through in xlights. Needs some fine tuning still but coming along.

You said "some of his work you just can't do in xLights right now" so I wanted to hear what that is because there are a lot of improvements to his effects that I did in xLights that you can't do in SuperStar...yet.
-
The big one is when he has a bird or dove or parrot flying thru.
And Yes you are doing some effects that for now he is not.
Thats why I am here and not there

You do scenes in xLights. It's called the Pictures effect and you can even draw the pictures in xLights using the Effect Assist panel. Its not where I want it to go feature wise yet but we've had some users create some pretty impressive sequences directly in xLights. The only things I know of that I like better in SuperStar is he has the auto-sequencing options, you can do individually colored letters in his text effect, and I like the round head on his Spiral effect. My equivalent is the Galaxy effect since we already had a spiral and I'm calculating everything mathematically and I never got the head looking like I wanted so I tabled it for now. I believe I can utilize OpenGL to draw the effect for me in back buffers but that's an experiment for next year.
-
Yea his spirals have always been neat. I will have to give the picture effect a try. Using someone neat sequence is a time saver I think. My main issue right now is importing properly so I can reduce the file size as much as possible. You did a tutorial on layer import didn't you.
