Title: First model in 4.0 - Boscoyo Bethlehem Star 42in
Post by: JasonPortwood on January 18, 2016, 04:15:41 PM
I created a model in xlights for the Boscoyo Bethlehem Star 42in.  I'm just stepping into xlights for sequencing and wanted to see how to make custom models.  I have the design down and I think it looks pretty good.  Building it reminds me of the good old days of making very simple graphics on an Apple II.  I can put my graph paper skills to use again :).

I wanted to know if I'm on the right track.  I kept the numbers in groups for specific parts.  Like center, large 4 point and small diagonal 4 point star section.  What would be a way to take advantage of that when putting effects on it?  Is it a matter of 3 different models to make the one?

Any pointers / direction would be great.

Thanks

Jason

Yes you've got the right idea.  The question is did you physically put the lights in the coro in this order?  For example, the gap between 102 and 103 - you're probably not going to bridge that gap with a regular string of pixels (usually 4" spacing).  You'll need to cut your string, run a wire across and then solder on both ends.

The power of xLights is you don't have to put things in visual/logical sequence and xLights handles it just fine.  So I often put lights into coro elements in a way that causes me the least amount of soldering.  Sometimes it makes for what looks like very odd numerical order in excel but xLights handles it like a champ.

As with many things, it's your choice.  My first year I was very methodical and everything had to be in logical sequence.  Now I'm more lazy (in my opinion) and my numbers look odd, but in the end it's just less work for me to get the same result.

Thanks fore the advice.  I don't have the prop yet but I knew I had to splice in extra wire in...  Of course from what you said I'll work that out a lot better with the ordering.  I was trying to make sure I could segment things in xlights if I needed to.

Thanks!

Jason

You can still segment things in xlights just fine.  xlights doesn't care if you skip channels.  In your example, you can have a model with channels 26, 90,44,99, 63, 106,81, and 115 to have just the tips of every point.  It's us humans that want everything logical/sequential.  It's just a computer program  :D

I will look at my star, I did not have to splice any of them, I may have a photo someplace to show the order I did it. Have not drawn a model for it, want to figure out nice effects for it outside the norm.

I am building my Bethlehem star models now too.   would VERY MUCH appreciate if you could get some pics!!!

Apologize if you cannot make out every number on my blue tags of tape.  But I did a quick fly over of the numbering I did on the star.  If I recall (not around to look at it at the moment) I did the outside first and then came into the middle.

A few different custom models would let you do more interesting effects.  E.g. the arms in different models, the center in another, stuff like that.  certain nodes in a straight string in another.

Thanks for posting that photo!   do you basically have them wired sequentially?  Or as your post states--around external portion then the center portion?
thx.
