Title: will skipping a universe create an issue now or later?
Post by: bpducman on March 19, 2016, 06:06:28 PM
I have not used Universe 1 since I Jumped over fence to NC now XL and I now find I need those numbers otherwise My OCD will make me re-number everything.

The Question is can I complete skip a universe and not cause some sort of computer Compiling dilemma.

Now or later ?

keeping blocks of addresses around is no problem.
changing addresses around in XL is also easily done -- change change the channels in your model.
changing network addresses is also easy, shuffling things around and moving models to a new universe.

the only thing I don't enjoy is moving items around within a universe, it requires that I then update the controller to match, and that means pulling out and connecting the controller.  but, I am also a victim of OCD and I also feel the need to move things around to make them orderly. :)

Hi,

No problem skipping a universe . They don't have to be in any particular sequence at all.

I have large gaps in the universe numbering

Thanks Just needed some confirmation..... I am also making the jump this year  from Sandevices which have been great for me to FC F16v2 which sounds to go to be true with the daughter board... So it looks like I have allot to do but this time I am going to leave enough gaps to keep me happy.

xLights doesn't care about Universe's, it only configures xLights channels. you can have blocks that are not defined no problem. remember also when using the Output method of assigning channels to your models, this as nothing to do with DMX Universes, just the start of the channel range that is on that output line in the setup tab.
