Title: Mirror effects?
Post by: Trooper on April 27, 2016, 07:54:41 AM
My wife has asked me to do a show that would have a mirror effect across the yard.  An example would be two mega trees, one at each end of the yard. One tree would spin left while the other would spin right.  Is there a way to do this easily?

Thanks

Sure just send the same data to both trees and cable the strings up in reverse on one side.

if both trees are similar -- ie. the controller strings going left-to-right...

then define one tree with the model using the bottom-left corner...
and the other tree with the model using the bottom-right corner.

copy the effects to the second treed as-is.

The effects will be flipped on the second tree.

If you want to have some parts of the sequence non-flipped, have another model using the same pixels where the corner is defined normally.

Layer Rendering - flip horizontal

If you want to use whole house models, then a second 'normal' model...   or selective use of layer rendering would be a good choice.

Yeah the problem is you said "easily".  No way for us to know what you consider easy.  I gave you a method that didn't involve doing the effects more than once in the sequencer.  All the other suggestions will work but require copying all the effects to another model and creating additional models.  So really you just need to figure out how you want to work.

Layer Rendering - flip horizontal
Are you referring to layer settings, transformation and flip horizontal? That must be done on each effect. If you are going to do that, just change the effect itself.

I do things like this quite frequently with multiple megatrees.   I consider it quite easy to set an effect's timing/movement/coloring/etc that I like onto one model then copy/paste onto another model and reverse the direction for example...   Like Gil said--it's what you consider "easy"....   I consider copy/paste pretty easy!!

But relying on copy/paste means any time you make an adjustment you gotta remember to delete all the effect from the other model and paste in new copies.

I use Adobe Illustrator a lot, and there is a neat little feature that lets you step and repeat graphics on the screen.  You make a change to the "master" graphic, and all other graphics you made with this feature change automatically.

Thinking out loud here, but I'm wondering if a new effect, or some method, could be created that would allow you to "link" back to the original effect.  Change the original effect, and the linked effects change too.  Parent - child relationship so to speak.

I'll be polite and not comment about that idea.

Ok, I'll say it.

The xLights user base has evolved from the hobbyists, tinkerers, hackers, explorers, engineers into the mainstream general public. Some just want to buy a sequence and have it play and they're proud to say "Look what I did" These are the first to send a PM the same 5 people asking for help.  Having the ability to mirror effects would be cool but not worth the resulting troubleshooting time spent fixing user errors.

There I said it. Some people spend 5 minutes trying to figure out what they did. Some spend 30 minutes typing up what they did asking for help instead of spending 5 minutes figuring it out for themselves. There. Stick a fork in it.
