Title: Mini tree strands
Post by: ranjanpa on September 14, 2016, 08:32:57 PM
I am planning to wrap a 50 pixel strand 4 times - up, down, up, down on my 3 foot minitree. Would I be able to select such a configuration in x lights so as to sequence it properly. Thanks

I haven't checked this out physically yet because I just got my medium-size minis from James at Boscoyo last weekend....   These are 50 pixel trees--5 columns of 10 (180 degrees) with 20 pixel 5 point star toppers.   I have seen these same mini trees sequenced in a display in Flowood MS and they looked quite good.   So...  I am expecting good things!!  Your concept should work, to the best of my knowledge

I can't tell if you mean you are wrapping spirals up and back down crossing each other or going up/down in vertical columns.  The second way can be done.  If you are wrapping spirals you need to make it happen in one trip up or down the tree.

Gil, am going up and down, not in spirals. Hopefully it should work then.

I do my 8ft pixel tree as strings of 120 with 4 strands (up, down,up, down).  I do my Boscoyo medium coro trees as 1 string of 50 with 5 strands (up down etc).  I only do 10 pixels in the star and it is plenty bright, no need for all 20.

I was thinking of ordering the 180 degree large mini trees from Boscoyo. And I was thinking of the white for a better daytime appearance, any thoughts

The cost of the 180 vs the 360 is not much different and to me even though I am using my 360 as a 180 it has more stability in standing up, i.e., wind resistance.  Plus if I ever decided to go to a 360 or a 270 I already have the prop in house.  I only care about how things look at night and white or dark does not make any difference in my mind.

The big mini tree (like military intelligence, eh??) is too big for our setup; they obscured one of our mega trees.   So we went with the medium mini trees.   Your setup may be different...

I have ten of the Dalek mini trees and I like Jim used the 360 tree as a 180 and only 10 pixels in the star. If you search some of my other posts you can see pictures of them. I would not use the 180 because the 360 is much easier to work with and is more stable.
Just my opinion but you can do what you wish.

Any opinions about the white vs Black? I live in Wisconsin and when there's snow on the ground I'm thinking the black will stick out like a sore thumb during the day

Kentd- do you have 1 output for the tree for both the tree and start, or 2 outputs on your board?

Are you asking if he had one or two outputs for the tree and STAR?  Chances are with that configuration he is running two trees and two stars with one output. I just completed my trees, and I used the medium tree. I'm using 60 pixels per tree so I can run 2 trees from one output.

I guess my main question is how to wire and set up my 85 pixel tree and 20 pixel star. Should i use one strand of pixels for both and can Xlights differentiate the two.

Yes, you can use one strand for 1 output to do both the tree and the star. So long as you're under 170 pixels you're fine, you can do more but then you're spanning universes and it gets a little more complicated. In your case I would run one output per tree, and I would just tie the power together between the beginning and the end of the string of pixels. Xlights can easily separate the tree from the star you just need to change the start Channel on the star and there's a couple ways to do it.

I am using one strand for my medium sized mini's from Boscoyo.  70 pixels for each tree and 20 pixels for each star.   I wired all up in series. Tree--1 up 2 dn 3 up 4 dn 5 up    to star---I found out the hard way (doh after really looking at xlights....) that you have to start the star in the center bottom or the center top.   Once I rewired my stars (took about an hour for 12 of them), all is well.   I am driving one set with an E682 and another set with an F16.  I am actually driving 6 mini's and stars in series with one output on my F16.   I tested this out weekend before last and it worked really well.
