I am on xlights 2016.50
I have been unable successfully import Vixen 2.1 effects into xlights. It appears that the individual channels are not being mapped correctly.

If it's the same issue I'm thinking of, it's a known problem. When I was using Vixen I imported as a data layer. That's a better option in my opinion. You still have the option to promote specific effects if you want to edit them.

The one vixen file I had works fine.

To clarify (for me) do all of the Vixen channels need to be created in xlights before attempting to import?
-
I do believe the setup page needs to have all your universes/channels defined.
-
This is the issue I reported. https://github.com/smeighan/xLights/issues/499 (https://github.com/smeighan/xLights/issues/499)
Again, not sure if this is what you are seeing.

So is it only 2.1 not working? I thought we normally imported 2.5.
-
Am I guessing correct that I must have ALL of my Vixen channels defined in xlights.

Yes. I answered that already when Randy asked.

I believe there are way more 2.1 users than 2.5 (me for 1).

That doesn't help answer the question I asked.

I can't speak to 2.5 but 2.1 Vixen does not work. As to Data layer that only works if it is the same layout as yours.

Well, isn't that special...... I have only ever used Vix 2.1 for my show. I have about 15 sequences of 1100 channels of LED's. Can't wait to build that all from scratch again........ :(

Before I go nuts I need to confirm that if I have 300 channels numbered 1 through 300 that I need to defing 300 channels in xlights. In other words the import is not using channel number to map channels but rather some other method. Since vixen maintains unused channels I will need to find som way to define these in xlights.
Am I missing something here?

I think I have figured out this one.
1) Convert the Vixen 2.x file to LOR using the Tools/Convert menu
2) Create a new sequence using the new LOR file just created and use the Import Effects
This seems to work quite well

I probably wouldn't have time to troubleshoot this but I will point out that the last several times this issue has been mentioned no one seems to ever post a link to download files that would allow a developer to look into it.

Point well taken. Note that Vixen 2.1 was very stable. Vixen 2.5 had one or two added features but was very buggy and most people couldn't run it. The problem was looked at by several different people and was unresolved. So if you had trouble with 2.5 you needed to back down to 2.1

So from what I'm hearing Data Layer imports from Vixen are working but not the "Import Effects" feature?

I am another one who is running Vixen 2.1 and Xlights. They are running separately in there own programs/schedules.
In 2014 I converted the xlights sequence with no music to a .vir (vixen routine file) and ended up with 3k + channels in vixen 2.1 And it seemed to run ok. But this year I decided to leave xlights sequence's in xlights and Vixen sequence's in Vixen and run two schedules. I let Vixen do the audio. And Xlights runs to no audio beats. Luckily my old computer is handling it.

you have to compress the profile into each sequence and then import into xlights. the data will not show up on the sequencer screen in xlights but it's there. then you can add effects to anything new that you are adding. not sure how adding new effects over old data that you can't see to erase would work. i haven't tried that yet. but, YOU CAN CONVERT VIXEN 2.1 into an xlights sequence. i've been running my show for 2 weeks this way. sad part is, i can't seem to get the scheduler to run solid in xlights so i have converted my xlights sequences back to vixen 2.1 so that i can use vixen's scheduler, which has been rock solid for me for the last 5 years.
first and foremost, your xlights channel line up has to match your channel line up in vixen channel for channel!
1. open vixen sequence in vixen and compress your profile into the sequence and save the sequence. close vixen.
2. open xlights
3. open new musical sequence in xlights and add your audio
4. select your timing 50ms
5. soon as you select your timing, it asks you to "select view" and gives you the "more options button"
6. press more options and import data from vixen. it will ask to locate the vixen file and you have to go to your vixen folder and open up the .vix file you are importing.
7. select all channels off at end
8. when it says done, you select done.
9. when your sequence pops up select "render all" up by the save tap.
10. once the render is done save the sequence.
you should have a fully converted vixen 2.1 sequence into xlights. ac channels and all! i just recently converted all of my old 2.1vix files into xlights and have added my new props right to the old songs. i hope this helps someone out.
