Just wondering if the latest versions of Xlights can use MP4 files directly? 

I currently rip the mp4 to get mp3 then do the sequencing; followed by using my Pi to play the sequence and the MP4 file.

Sure can. You need to change the filter when selecting the audio file in the bottom of right of the file open dialog.
