Title: Partial lag on mega tree
Post by: Shawn42 on November 28, 2016, 10:40:54 PM
Have an issue with partial lag on a 16x50 tree. When running a sequence from Xlights, legs 12 through 16 have a bit of a lag behind the first 11 legs. All settings are fine and power is not an issue. LOR Pixcon controller and there is no lag in the onboard test pattern. Tried rebooting the controller, restarting Xlights, created a new sequence to play, unplugged the first few legs to see what the effect would be on the lagging legs and nothing works.
Any ideas?

Is that the only thing you are running?  How many universes are being sent from xLights?  What's your network setup look like?  Are you running unicast or multicast?  Do you have any unicast controllers defined that are not turned on?  Do you have an LOR services running?  Are 3 people streaming Netflix on the same network?  Did you turn off the porn server?

Porn server taken offline just to be safe.

When I am experiencing the lag it is just when the XLights is playing to lights or run from the scheduler.

Computer is a new desktop that I purchased this last weekend, middle of the road specs. Not super high end but not a clunker.

Setup is (2) Falcons and the one LOR Pixcon. The Pixcon is dedicated to running only a 16x50 mega tree that is giving me the lag.

No LOR services are running except for the Pixcon Assistant that I program the unit with. Honestly not sure if that was running in the background when I had Xlights playing to the lights.

Was unsure if the Pixcon could handle absolute addressing so setup that tree to run on universe 50 with each leg being 50:1, 50:2, 50:3, etc.

I believe the Falcons and the balance of the lights are still on universe 1.

Network is dedicated to Christmas lights and separate from my house network so internet usage shouldn't matter (I guess?).

Everything is running multicast, nothing unicast.

I am currently at work so I cannot attach my RGBeffects file, will post when I get home.

Be easy on me, this is my first year with all of this. Thank you!

Well I don't really hear anything your doing that is wrong.  Last few nights I'm running tests from my PC and I'm outputting 135 universes of data and I don't see any issues.

Before I responded I wanted to get home and swap the board with another to see if the board was the issue and it was not. The 5 lagging legs of the tree continue to lag. The video on my screen does not lag, only the mega tree does.

Attached is my rgbeffects file. I have got to be doing something wrong in Xlights.

Just unplugged all the other controllers to see if there was some interference somehow, still lags.

Tried running the controller on Unicast, same issue.

Did you try running the tree with a Falcon board?  I was trying to add a SanDevices card to my show last night and I was ready to smash it with a hammer.  Trying to run some candy canes 15 feet away and they kept cutting off every 5 seconds while the rest of the yard being run off Falcons was running fine.

We have a winner. No lag on the Falcon. I was able to round up another Falcon to replace the Pixcon and will be back in business once I get it tomorrow.

Thank you for the help Gil. I was really dreading swapping boards because of the different green connectors that snap to the board (and F the person that decided to make them ever so slightly different). I begrudgingly swapped them and the lag was gone. I still don't understand why a Pixcon AND a Pixlite would have identical lag (Dave suspects a universe issue) but the Falcon handles it without breaking a sweat.

Just wanted to give an update to thanks for the help and put the fix out there in case anyone runs into a similar issue.

Bottom line, use Falcons. The only thing better than their board is their customer service.

I had problems with a pixlite that I didn't have with a falcon. The only change I made was the controller.

I will only use falcon from here on out.

I just had problems trying to use an E6804 I had lying around.  The issue turned out to be I tried to use in multicast but it couldn't handle the number of universes on my network apparently.  I changed just that controller to unicast and it started working.  The symptom was it kept shutting off the lights every 5 seconds and then would keep recovering.
