Title: Sequence Length Limit
Post by: xolov516 on January 17, 2017, 04:24:04 PM
So I was curious if there was a limit to the length of a sequence that Xlights can handle. Last year was my first year using Xlights and I love it. This year my wife and I wanted to try something different. We create a sound file that is 43 minutes long instead of many short sequences. When I load the long sound file into Xlights everything is good until I go to play it then it crashes. Am I asking to much of it? I know my computer can handle the render and the file, or am I just doing something wrong?

You may be able to do on the Mac version which is 64 bit, but Windows probably won't work. Regardless, managing a song/sequence that long is not really best practice. I suggest working with smaller sections and then play in succession.

It's purely an issue of a 32-bit process on Windows only gets a certain amount of memory no matter how much is in your machine.  We are working on a 64-bit Windows version.  I actually made all the changes and have the 64 bit version working on my machine.  Only thing not working in 64 bit that I've found is the Vamp plugins because the DLL for that has never been released as 64 bit.  But it needs more testing...one user built the code and said it wasn't working on his real lights but I had it working on my setup.

That's what I was afraid of. I guess I should of asked about that before I made the song. Oh well, I will go with the suggestion and just cut the song up into 15 minute sections and go from there. Thanks for the help!

You will find that the longer the song the more frequent issues appear.  I don't have any problem running sequences back to back with no break between if that is what you want to see.  Just make sure your music and sequence end and start at exactly the same times.  I get breaks between sequences when I do not pay attention to the music fade out times or I don't make sure effects run right to the end.

The longer the sequence the longer the load time, the longer the copy time, the longer the save time, harder to edit, and on and on.  In my experience most folks only watch a show for 10 min or less, so having something really long means nothing to the majority of viewers.  Folks who draw a lot of traffic usually end up making the show shorter in order to get people to move on.  I've seen references to folks cutting their show to just one song in order to keep the viewers moving.  I know of 3 shows in my area who have had so much publicity that they draw tons of viewers and end up spending their evening outside directing traffic.  Not something I would look forward to.  On the other hand do the show for your self and enjoy it, your choice.

Yes sir, I always like to get things done as soon as I can. After they are done, then I can go back and make small adjustments that I think would work best. I always try to plan waay ahead but that is just me.

Yea I never really thought about that. I just thought it was a good idea but I have seen the light. I don't get much traffic to my shows anyways. I do it for the fun of it and for my kids and family to enjoy. Thanks guys
