Title: Bulk change an effect

I"ve read through the manual and still cannot figure out how to highlight a number of lines in the sequencer and bulk change the effect.

You can't highlight lines you can only select effects.  So unselect all timing tracks, zoom out, and drag a box around all the effects you want to select.  Change the effect panel and hit the Update button.
