Title: Crashing on a regular basis - 2017.44
Post by: algerdes on December 23, 2017, 04:17:41 AM
I am experiencing crashes (which were very rare up until this version) whenever I change the length of or move an effect along the timeline.  This is reminiscent of what was reported in an earlier version, but was not experienced by me until now.

Version is 2017.44. The layout is fairly simple compared to my other locations.  The computer is a three core (six virtual) AMD-6300 (3500 Mhz).  16 GB of RAM, 26 GB Virtual.  This computer has been rock solid running xLights for several years.

I am including the latest crash file.  Sorry, no video.

Yeah I updated to the latest yesterday and got 3 crashes in an hour.  I was on v38 before that and pretty much never get crashing.

For now, we have adopted the procedure of: 1.  Make a change.  2. Ctrl-S.  3. Repeat.
Had to turn off "render on save".  Takes forever as it gets closer to the final parts of the render process.  Used to be very quick.

I found out later today I mispoke.  Apparently I was still on 2017.42 when it crashed.  I'm now up to 2017.44.

Thanks Gil.  I'm definitely on 2017.44.

Like I said, it was a surprise considering that issue was reported as fixed.  I'll try to copy off the sequences and other settings, remove xLights and then install a fresh copy.  Perhaps there are "crumbs" left from the updates that are causing problems.  (At this point in time, I'm guessing - but have to try something.)

I don't think uninstalling/reinstalling will fix any issues.  It would be very unusual for any installation files to be corrupted.  The program probably wouldn't even start if they were.  And we don't alter your xlights registry when you reinstall so you end up with the same settings you had unless you run the command line option to reset the registry.

I actually don't think it is "leftovers" either. (Have never had a problem with upgrades before, and we all know there have been many.)

The thing is, when you don't have any idea, but you still have the problem, you start from scratch.

FYI - I went all night last night without a crash.  It is even more frustrating when a problem just "disappears".
