Being new this may have been covered but I can not find an answer. Is it possible to preview your sequences on the layout window instead of the little dinky window in the sequencer?

That dinky window is a dockable panel.  You can grab it and tear it away and then resize it.  I have mine placed over on a 2nd monitor taking up the full size of the monitor.
