I downloaded the 2018.1 Xlights last night and it’s failing to open. Anything past 2017.44 will not open for some reason.
I’m running windows 10.
What could be the issue.
-
Crash logs?
-
Are you trying to run the 64 bit version on a 32 bit computer?
Win 10 works fine for me and lots of others.
-
This is from the crash log.

That is not one of our crash logs. If you can’t find a crash zip file can you get far enough to package up your logs using the tools menu?
-
That's the issue. It won't open Xlights at all.
What's the name so of the file in the xlights folder that I might can locate the crash log?
-
If you aren't starting there won't be a crash file so you would need to track down the log file.
Mine is located here:
C:\Users\Gil\AppData\Roaming\xLights_l4cpp.log
-
Thanks Gilrock,
I've attached a zip file. Today's try is going to be at the bottom when it's opened.
-
So it seems to be hanging
2018-01-11 19:58:34,546 7384 log_base [DEBUG] Backup completed.
2018-01-11 19:58:34,623 7384 log_base [DEBUG] Loaded network config C:\Users\russe\Documents\Christmas 2015\xlights_networks.xml
Can you send us the xlights_networks.xml, keybindings and rgbeffects xml files.
-
If you could zip up the xlights_networks.xml, xlights_rgbeffects.xml, and xlights_keybindings.xml files I can see if I can find an error opening them.
You can always backup your show directory and remove those 3 files and xLights will open and create them but everything will be blank like you are just starting out. But that at least shows it will start and its a problem in one of those files.
-
If that doesnt work try starting xlights from a cmd shell with the /w switch ...
"c:\program files\xlights\xlights.exe /w"
-
I've attached the three files.
Thanks for everyone's help.
-
Your rgbeffects file is essentially empty. If you were to delete it and reopen xLights it would be no worse than it already is. If you were expecting to see models in the file I would be noting its size and then go back through your backup folders until you find one significantly larger than it currently is and copy that into your show directory and try again.
-
I tried that and it still will not open.
The most current one that I can download and work is the 2017.44.
-
Did you try the /w suggestion
-
Yes, still would not open.
I just downloaded 2018.2 and it crashes also. It says xlights.exe has stopped working.
I just downloaded 2017.44 and it works fine.
I don't know where the issue could be.
-
Start in a new show folder.
-
How can I start it in a new show folder?
I'm willing to try that to see if it'll work. I can't get xlights to open.
-
1) Close xLights.
2) Rename your show folder with something like "_backup" in the name.
3) Launch xLights from a command prompt using the /w option.
4) Upon launching xLights will prompt you for a show folder so you need to create a blank directory.
-
Tried that and it still didn't work. Nothing will work above the 2017.44.
This is a new desktop with windows 10. I'm not sure why it's not working.
-
Can you either capture a video showing all those steps fail or get into zoom with an expert user sometime?
-
I know this might sound like a dumb question, how do I get into zoom?
-
Blue button XLights.org
-
Have you been into zoom yet to get help ... we have looked at your files and cant reproduce the problem and I am keen to get you going again.
-
Yeah we don't always just hangout in the Zoom channel but if you can get in the xLights Facebook group just post a request for help and there is almost always power users that can help.
-
I just downloaded 2018.3. I had to tweak my models because Xlights could not figure the start channel on 4 groups. Once I did that, 2018.3 is working.
-
Ummm what? Keith did a new feature get added? Groups don't have start channels. Sounds like you had circular dependencies in your models.
-
No new feature adding start channels to groups.
-
I'm not sure what happened. I had a model setup running 12 candy canes together, all doing the same thing. Then I had them broken down into groups of three. For some reason it didn't like the names that I had, so I renamed them and it's working now.
Before I couldn't even get xlights to work on the versions between 2017.44 and 2018.3.
I'm glad to get it working and thanks for looking to see what could have been the issues.

You don't mention the problematic names but keep in mind that all xLights data is stored in XML files and you can sometimes use characters that will confuse the parsing during file load.
I would mention the names you needed to change and perhaps the programmers can create a filter to allow them or at least get past the error.
-
... perhaps the programmers can create a filter to allow them...
...or prevent them :)
-
Here is the attachment of what I had to change. I had to rename the Candy Cane groups. Once I did that, they all worked fine.
-
A group model would not have the candy cane picture icon. What you have are normal candy cane models. Are the names in the screenshot the names that cause a problem or the fixed names?
