Hey guys,
I wanted to get an opinion on whether to use Universe or Absolute for setting up my Layout. I see Gil using Universe in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGgsieJC7-0
Would one be better than the other? Let me know what you think.

Universe and start channel is always the best way to go.

Just some things you have to remember if using absolute. The controllers need to be taught where the universes align to the absolute numbering so you either need to define everything in every controller or be able to tell the controller the absolute offset of at least the first universe it uses. If you use Falcon controller absolute can be easier but I just can't think of any good argument to use absolute. There's a couple who swear by it but they like never change their show.
-
Absolute is great if you only planning on doing your show this year and never again and you always do things perfectly the first time and never ever change your mind.
If that isn’t you then absolute will put you in renumbering hell.

I am switching to a Falcon controller and Expansion board this year instead of the E682.
So would Universe still be the way to go? My show does change from year to year.
-
Once again, universe and start channels is the best practice.
Unless you enjoy the headaches every time you change something.

I have been using absolute for years. It is no more difficult to use, IMHO, than any othe scheme. In my opinion it is all in what you learn and I started with using pixelnet which is universes of 4096 channels. I do make changes in my layout every year. I for one find universe and channel notation confusing as heck, the last thing I want to figure out is dividing a props channel count by 512 or 510 in order to figure out how many universes I need when I can just pick a start address and the total channel count. Also I would never tell you (like some folks are) that there is only one way to do something.
-
Bah.... Output# + Offset is better. I don't have any universes defined anymore. Don't need them.
-
Thanks for all the info,I appreciate it.
-
I'd like to know how you setup a SanDevices controller when using Absolute numbering or Output #'s. Is it even possible?
-
Gil, thanks for your comment, also like to know this info 🤔

I use mainly Sandevices and have always used universe and channel numbers, I am not even sure absolute would work with sandevices, I make changes to my display all the time so it would be a nightmare IMO.

Depends on if you like Coke or Pepsi ::)
I suspect that dkulp, like me, chooses Dr. Pepper (DDP) ;D

Even ddp you should reference your first model as #id:sc and chain from there.
