Title: serious issue!!
Post by: charlie-68 on August 24, 2018, 09:08:21 AM
I just downloaded the last up date to xlights this am and it seems to have serious issues with xlights. I have seem to have lost my setup tab, layout tab and sequences. all the render caches are saying "no match to your search". None of the files are opening (xlights-keybindings; -networks; -rgbeffects).  It looks like a new install of xlights. I have a backup on a thumb drive but I have made changes that are backed up. What happened and could it effect other peoples programs??  Charlie J

Sounds like you just need to redirect xlights to your show directory.

I have checked the show folder and it appears ok. I can see my files when I open my documents file and checked the file names are correct. I must be doing something wrong, but I do not know what it is? I just changed the show folder and back to what I thought it should be and still nothing. This is interesting as I have xlights on two computers 1) my regular computer which I use all the time and 2) my show computer which I only use my show. My regular computer is where I experiment with new effect ideas, after I get them working I then enter the iofo to my show computer. Its only my show computer that I'm having trouble with. With all this the address lines are the same other than the computer name.

So the program is starting but everything is blank like you have never added anything to setup or layout.
First look at the Setup tab where it lists the Show folder.  Is that correct?
Close xLights and open up the xlights_rgbeffects.xml file in Notepad++ and see if all your models are listed.  If it's not populated then you'll need to grab your show directory files from a backup or the other PC.
If xLights is starting up that means you should be able to do a Package Log Files and post the zip file and we can tell you what folder its using and whether anything looks wrong in the log.

You might not be a member of the Facebook group but if you were you can usually ask for help and jump into the xLights Zoom channel and someone can remotely look at your stuff and get it fixed up.

I'm not a Facebook user so I'll send you the files. I hope this is what you need.  Charlie J.

I have stopped and restarted xlights no change. Yes it looks like a new install with all tabs blank. In the setup tab the show folder appears ok. I have a backup on a thumb drive but I could get it to upload to xlights.  Charlie J.
PS I know the xoom is Wed. evening but what time?

You can log into Zoom anytime you would like.
There's five people in there right now.

Your xlights_rgbeffects.xml file is completely empty so yes it looks like a blank show directory.  So you gotta do like I said and copy your stuff from a backup that has your models or another PC where you say its working.

My orginal  question is not answered. Why when I downloaded the up date did all these files get deleted or moved? I have been trying to get my files back but I not been able to as of yet. It seems that when I try to move a file to xlights it gets blocked. I may try to get xoom tonight to see if I can be helped.  Charlie J.

You don’t need to be a company to log into zoom. You just click the zoom link and it connects you.

As for your issue it is bound to be something simple so focus on getting connected to the zoom call and try to resist doing any more damage to your setup.

Well because the answer to the first question is no the update did not delete or move any files.  And if you can't move files into the Show folder then it sounds like you are trying to put them in the folder where the xlights.exe resides.  That's not your show folder at least it better not be.  The OS protects you from writing stuff there.

This is your show folder.  Is that where you are trying to put the files?

I don't know if you're aware of it but the new Zoom Link in help on xlights takes you to a sign up page not a meeting page with the ID number like the link at xlights.org.

After couple of hours of working on the issue , seeing that the setup of the tabs was changed, the one sequence that I finally got working was changed, I deleted xlights , and the folders connected to it. I reloaded xlights to a new folder, reentered the setup and layout tabs. I'm glad I had paper notes to help me along. Now I just need to redo all my sequences. Then test it all to make sure its OK. I'm glad I do not do musical sequences.

You told us everything is working fine on your regular computer and that its only the computer that plays the show that has an issue.  So it would be completely nutballs to recreate your entire setup, layout, and sequences over on the show computer when you can just copy the directory over.

Well coping the files might be good but I do not have my entire show on my normal computer and also my normal computer is a 32 bit as the show computer is a 64 bit. So I only do full sequences on the show computer, and experiment with effects on the normal computer, which I can quickly access the internet. It still stands that something happened to the show computer that changed something, and it happened after I downloaded the updates.  Charlie J. ps I'm getting my sequences done.

xLights saves a backup of your show folder every time you open the program unless you turned that feature off.  I'm 100% sure the installer did not delete anything and you probably have good files somewhere on that computer.  I'm sure it was the cat's fault walking across the keyboard.

If you had gotten on Zoom I was going to help you find the xlights files that you misplaced.
You wouldn't be the first one I helped who forgot where they set xlights to store the files.
