Title: Change model in layout?

Sorry, this is a dumb question. I have a model in my layout that I originally put in as a wreath. I'd like to change that to a string. Can I do that? Or do I need to create a new model and replace the old model? My concern is just how it displays in the preview window. Thanks.

Sure.  Just delete the model and put in whatever you want.

and set it up with the same universe/channel count and then any effects sequenced will appear as you planned them.
