Title: Gingerbread pattern

I am doing a gingerbread pattern with 2812B ribbons like the one that is attached to this message.

Ignore the candy and just imagine I am doing the icing patchwork. 

How would you tackle the model for this pattern? Maybe a poly line or A matrix on top of another matrix with the top one turned 90 degrees?  Would I then group them to I can treat them as one unit?

Looking for any ideas to try.

I'd just create a custom model like:

 1      3       5       7      9
     2      4       6       8      10
11    13     15     17     19
    12     14     16    18      20
