I'm trying to setup my own sequence. I've imported others no problem, but starting from scratch none of the effects will drag and drop in the sequence. I can highlight a timing area, right click and insert random effects, just can't seem to get a single effect dragged in. Any suggestions?

Do you actually have timing marks installed? There has to be timing marks for an effect to 'take'.
-
yes I do. I can highlight some of the timing marks and right click to insert random effects. I can drag those around, copy and paste them. My work around as of now is to generate enough random effects that the ones I want get placed. Then i just copy and paste them as needed.

I need to see a video of what you are doing or jump into zoom and show the folks there your issue.

There have been a few times when "drag and drop" of an effect doesn't seem to work. Then I'll go to the layout tab and click Save, then it seems to work again. It doesn't happen dependably enough to hint at a cause.
I reliably update to the latest version. (55 as of yesterday) 2018.52 64bit was the last version that did it. Haven't seen it since (but I'm not working on any new sequences now)

Here's a screen shot of a sequence I threw together for testing purposes... I can get the effects in there by either selecting a group of timings right clicking and inserting random effects, they will also insert if i highlight the timing area and use the keyboard shortcuts. Once there i can copy, paste and move them around.

A screenshot is not a video.

I don’t seem to be able to reproduce the problem.

With everything else that you've done have you tried rebooting your computer?
I've had a pending Windows update cause some odd behavior in my computer that went away after a reboot.

Thanks all for looking and offering suggestions. I've tried everything I could think of. I watched hours of videos and how to set these sequences up and there's just work. Mine nada. Are there some setting files that xlights creates? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. There must be something because the reinstall had my network settings already.

The keybinding, rgbeffects file and network file under your show directory hold the settings for xlights

When I watched the video the first thing I noticed is when you clicked on the Single Line model row it did not properly select the cell so that could be a bug and would also be the reason you could not drop an effect there. But the bottom model row was working but I never saw you try to go back and drag an effect after the first one failed. It appeared the Single Line model row fixed itself after you inserted a few effects on the lower row which may have just been a recalculation of the row information. What I would do is quit creating the timing track during the new sequence creation just create a sequence first and then right-click the first timing row and then create a timing track. It's different code to create a timing track pre-sequence vs post-sequence creation. See if that works. If so then there may be a little bug about the number of timing rows present when you create a timing track during the new sequence wizard. I never create them then I always do it later.

Thank you for the suggestion Gilrock. I just tried that and still have the same problem. I have just learned all the key shortcuts for the effects and insert them that way. I just think it odd that once they are inserted they can be moved, would seem if they couldn't be dragged and dropped they wouldn't snap to a timing mark any other way. For now I think I'll just stick to the keyboard and quit pulling my hair out over this... Didn't have much to start with. Thanks again for everyone's suggestions.

Have you tried to install xlights to a new location and see what that does?

I don't have another computer to try it on, but I've uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted settings files, installed to another directory, and even reinstalled windows as a fresh install. Still get the same thing. It worked the very first time I tried it and after that nada. I'm ok with the keyboard shortcuts, so I've given up on the drag and drop for now. Thanks for the suggestion though.
