Title: What DMX model to use for snow machine
Post by: flipflopfury on October 30, 2020, 10:38:45 AM
Extreme rookie here. Wondering if someone can help with what DMX model to use in xLights for a DMX snow machine with 512 dip switches, etc. Planning on (because i was told i could) direct wiring from controller to machine, which will create even more questions. But for now, just wondering how to set up the model to send ON/OFF signal to snow machine. Thanks.

I would use moving head bars.

one day if we're real lucky one of the nice devs will make snow machine and fog machine models for us :)

First, let's worry about DMX.  Do you have your Controller for the Snow Machine set up?  Your Snow Machine has an address set (the 9 dip switches).  Currently only DIP1 is ON, so that means your Snow Machine is at address 01.  From the graphic below it, it looks like sending any DMX data 6-255 turns the device on, and 0-5 turns it off.  The Snow Machine needs to be physically connected to the DMX controller.

Second, is your DMX Controller needs to be in xLights.  Please confirm IP address and Universe with your DMX Controller.

Third, it probably doesn't matter which DMX Device you set up, but the Moving Head seems smart because it has a built-in beam that you can see physically on your layout, looks like it's spraying snow.

On that model, you probably only want to find the "White" channel, and set it to 1. Why 1? Well, it means it's the FIRST channel in whatever you set the start channel to be.  It does not mean "Channel 1", it means "Start Channel + 1".  Do not be confused.

The important part is in the Controller Connection.  I still haven't figured out what "Port" means, but I set mine to "1" because I only control DMX, and do not have a Pixel Controller.  Set your Protocol to DMX-PRO, and then set your DMX-PRO Channel to the Address of your Snow Thrower (which is currently "1").

Fourth, when you want to turn on your Snow Thrower, I would use the DMX Effect, and set the Channel 1 Slider to full when you want it on and make the effect as long as you want.

Easiest thing to test is just pick a DMX model that has enough channels then drop a DMX Effect and play with the sliders to see which channel does what you need.  And in that last reply 1 does not mean start channel + 1....1 is the start channel I didn't use a 0 base.
