I have a 60 pixel/meter tree that I would like to see what it would look like if I rewire to 30 pixel/meter. Just for a test.
Is there a way between xLights or FPP (or a controller?) to emulate it so that it outputs to only every second pixel? I know I can do grouping, but that's not quite the same.

Easiest would be to make two trees in your xlights layout. Sequence them both and view the difference on screen. I'm not aware of how that could be done in a controller, but I'm not saying it could not be done.

I've a tree with 60 legs /M. I just changed the number of nodes per string to 120 (from 240) and you get a 30 leds/meter tree. By the way it looks great! The controller most likey will not skip nodes. but xlights will.
Jnealand idea will work but I think it may be a lot of effort.

Not much effort to add a second tree and then copy the effects to the second tree. This is only to see it on screen.

If I do that I only see the first half of the LEDs turn on on the tree.

Sounds like you did not configure the second tree with the new configuration of half the pixels.

This is easy to do with the single strand affect using Skip's with a band size of 1 and a skip size of 1 using only 1 color of black.
Open up your tree down to the Strand level and drop that affect on every strand it will mask every other pixel on each strand when you put effects on it.
