Okay great. Thank you for the info. I'll branch and work on a new effect!

My GitHub username is MrRocketman.

Thanks!

Ah well duh. Guess I had to fork it first. Pull request submitted.

What's the process for becoming an actual contributor on the main repo? Submit more good pull requests? Ha

How do I go about submitting a pull request? Seems I need to have permissions. I dipped my toes in by fixing a small bug in the single line effect.

Awesome thanks for the video link. Exactly what I was hoping for. Working on building the source now.

What exactly do you mean by

I did take the time to create one 3D effect - near the end of the video.

Did you write new code? Or just use the existing effects on the 2D matrices?

Also, is there a general process for adding new effects to XLights? Or do I just start digging? I definitely won't have time to do full 3D, but I want to at least try to add some effects that work on a 3d matrix.

Yeah I'm looking at a 3d matrix. Not a perfect cube though.

Didn't know Madrix existed. Holy crap is it expensive! I'd love to support more development of XLights, but not at the price point of Madrix! Or if I find time maybe I'll take a crack at the code.

I'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but are there any plans in the pipeline for 3D models and effects? Don't shoot me for asking haha. I've haven't heard it talked about recently but I'm pretty sure it's taboo since it would probably entail a complete rewrite :)

Anyways, any thoughts or info or a direction to start researching would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Enhancement Requests / Re: Video Effect Quality on P10s

For one you're probably standing too close.  You need to be far enough back that people mistake it for a TV because the pixels are blending together.  The leds in these panels are just not going to give you the quality you see on a computer screen.  I don't do any processing to the videos and I've been happy with it.

Hmmm. My minimum viewing distance is 100 ft. I feel like that's pretty reasonable. They blend together pretty well.

It just seems like there's something limiting them to only 6 bit color or something. There are very distinct lines where it goes from one color in the background to the next. Where it should be a smooth transition. I'll try to get a picture to better explain it.

Enhancement Requests / Video Effect Quality on P10s
« on: December 21, 2016, 01:45:03 AM »
Hi all,

I've been trying to get a video working on my 7x7 P10 matrix for a while and am struggling. So it's a 224 x 112 matrix.

I can add the video effect and choose a 480p version of my video and it scales it and looks fine on the computer. Same if I choose a 1080p version of my video.

But when I go look at it in real life, it's terrible quality. Nothing like the preview. Any black backgrounds are full of artifacts. And the video looks like a super compressed picture.

Is there a simple way to change this for better quality? I created a 224x112 version of the video in Final Cut and that got rid of the artifacts from the black backgrounds. But still very compressed looking in real life.

So my hack for that was to use ffmpeg and - qscale:v 2 to get decent jpgs. Then I'm just using the picture effect to cycle those images. But then I stumbled on another issue, the picture effect seems to be limited to 9999 pictures. So I had to painfully find the point very 9999 ends in the sequence and add a new picture effect. And rename pictures 10,000-1200 back to 1-2000 to get the second picture effect to work.

So I thought I hacked together a solution. But it still looks very compressed and bad looking on the P10 in real life.

What am I missing?
Any suggestions?

Nutcracker Effects / Re: Single Strand Wrapping

I've got it set for 2 cycles at the moment, so it's doing that in the middle of the effect as well as when the preview loops.

Yeah, that's potentially an option. Good thought. That would be a little tricky to line up the colors though.

Never used a circle, but remember you don't have to. You can create a line model set to the same channels as the circle and you shouldn't have any problem doing what you mentioned.

Well that's the thing though, even with a single line model representing the circle, it does the same thing.

And even if you just use a single line model by itself, the effect goes to the end of the line, waits till the whole effect has gone to the end, then resets.

Nutcracker Effects / Single Strand Wrapping

Hello all,

I just stumbled across something that I'm not sure how to accomplish.

If you take a basic circle model, and do a single strand effect on it, with the render style set to single line, how do I make the effect continue around the circle smoothly when I have it set for multiple cycles? I almost think this just needs to be another checkbox so the effect wraps back to the beginning of the strand. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Video attached for clear description.

Thanks!

Nutcracker Models / Re: MegaTree with Star in the middle
« on: November 28, 2015, 06:11:24 PM »
Wow, it dawned on my right after posting that all I need is a Custom model 16x50 that's not part of my display. And just leave my 16 single strand models for visual purposes only.

Hopefully this helps someone down the road.

Nutcracker Models / MegaTree with Star in the middle
« on: November 28, 2015, 05:22:51 PM »
Hello,

I am having troubles properly defining my MegaTree due to the fact that my star is in the middle of the tree. I've attached a drawing to show my channel numbers/how my MegaTree is physically wired.

My MegaTree is 16 strands of 50 pixels. I thought I would be able to define it normally, with say 8 strands of 100 nodes so they zig-zag. And then turn on individual strand numbers. The problem is my star comes at the end of the 9th strand and data comes back out of the star into the 10th strand. That would be right in the middle of an XLights strand.

Any ideas on how I can define my MegaTree model in XLights properly?

The best I've come up with is just 16 individual single strand models and then a group to encapsulate them. But then I can define my Matrix/Image faces to the model.

Thanks,
James (MrRocketman)
