problem with 4K resolution screens
« on: April 06, 2015, 07:31:19 PM »
I am not sure if this is a bug or not yet supported.

I have a new lenovo laptop with a 4K screen 3840*2160 windows 8.1 and I am running XL/NC 4.0.15. I am having difficulty with XL/NC being able to run in this resolution. I have tried to reduce the resolution but it makes things worse by only give half of the screen with no sliders.

in 3840x2160 the text boxes are not looking good as the text is too big for the box.

I have tried running a 2nd monitor at 1920x1080 and moving the program to that screen but it just gets big and doesn't resize back down to the correct resolution.

I have similar problem with my Lenovo X1 Carbon, which has 2560x1140 resolution. Sliders are ok but numbers are too big to fit in boxes (or more likely, boxes are too small). I do all my serious sequencing on my desktop with dual 1920x1080 screens (no display issues on those.)

You guys are making the rest of us jealous with all this fancy display stuff.  Maybe I need to unretire so I can buy some new computer hardware.  LOL

Yeah I tried to make the program crash if you had a monitor bigger than me but they wouldn't let me.  Luckily I have a $1000 Dell Ultrasharp 30" monitor so not too many of you have a better one...More pixels is not always better.  I haven't seen a display look better than mine yet or I'd buy it.

If anyone would like to buy me one of those fancy high res laptops, I'd be more than happy to take a deeper look at this.   :-)

Seriously, I grabbed a utility last night to allow me to run my MacBookPro at full retina resolution (2880x1800).  Setup my Parallels VM to run full screen at that resolution and set it to large fonts and could definitely see a bunch of issues.   I fixed most of what I saw.  Hopefully 4.0.16 will work better for you.  If you see other major areas of Text boxes being cut off (mostly not tall enough), let me know where.

The next thing I think we need to consider is the toolbar size for the non-effect toolbars.   They seemed very small at that high of a resolution.   Sean may need to create some larger icons for those bars as well.

Gil I would agree that your 30" ultrasharp monitor is better than my 15" 4K laptop. on my the pixels are too small. I am forever having problems with older programs as well as they don't understand the resolution.

Dan, thanks for looking at the higher resolution on the retina display as well and the problems that you have identified will go along way in fixing the issues in other displays such as 4K.

Dan you have got the majority of the places where the HiDPI screen was getting messed up. the preview screen and its sub screens could use some help as well. specifically the models list dialog box and model modify boxes. There are also issues with the image set size box.

I am now running 4.0.16 on my 3840x2160 4K screen and it is looking good, especially when I make the gridlines and icons extra large.

And I'm not sure I know the guidelines for creating new stuff.  I know we've talked about not giving specific sizes but what do you do for instance when you want to create an edit box but you want it shorter than the defaults like you know your going to never type a number bigger than 10?

You need to turn on the "Use Dialog Units" box, then set the height to -1 (which means use the default height), then use something for the width.   The dialog units allows it to scale up a bit with font size.

Dan, when you have sometime :) can you take a look at some more of the dialog boxes that are not expandable such as the edit display elements, add models. the options are not able to be seen. there a re a number of these sub dialog boxes that are like this.

Also saving the width of the right column where the different windows live would be useful as the default size if not wide enough.

many thanks

Neil
