WS2811, E682, and Xlights/Nutcracker
« on: August 13, 2015, 01:08:32 PM »
Wasn't sure where to ask this.
I have the original RobG design 10 watt RGB and the WS2811 drivers to turn them into pixels. If I put 12 volts on the original board and ground each of the R, G, and B terminals, they light up correctly.
Using the WS2811 board, if I use my E682 and use the test feature, Red is Green (1), Green is Red (2), and Blue is Blue (3).
If I use Xlights (the E682 is still set to RGB and WS2811), I get a Red, Blue, Green output using the RGB chase pattern (is this pattern in RGB order?).
Something is amiss here. One of my problems is that the port I am using on the E682(3-3), is already tied up with pixa-bulbs and I can't change the configuration. Shouldn't the output be the same in the E682 software and in X-Lights?
I can change the wiring, but not so sure the output will be correct. Should I set these up correctly in X-Lights (or the E682) to match the light output I already have?
Thanks

It is best if you change the RGB,BRG,GRB, setting in the controller.

Since you have different string types on a bank and all items on the bank must be the same, you will have to make the RGB color order in Nutcracker. It is defined on a per-model basis on the string node type pull down.

Thanks,
So I will have to experiment with that model and get it right before I continue.  Is there any reason why the test patterns on the E682 are different than those in Xlights?

I think that the xL test pattern will always send in 'RGB'.

Try creating a small sequence , with ON red , then green , then blue , each of 5 secs or so and then click on Output to lights and run it from there.

What do u get - same as the controller ?

gerry is correct.

XLights (which is a separate program from NC) only does RGB as a test signal. It is meant to test to see if all three channels of control are being sent to the lights and not a way to play with specific colors. If the lights come on at all then the electronics and the driver is functioning.

That being said, if you do as is also is suggested to create a sequence to sent out a Red color wash and you get green then there is something else wrong.

xLights sends out data to channel 1, 2, and 3 and assumes you have them mapped to RGB.  If you don't then you can get other results.  But when you check the channel 1 box that is the channel xLights is firing no matter what color you have it mapped to.

I've got it figured out.
When I run the Test Pattern on the E682, for "1" I get red, for "2" I get green, and for "3" I get blue.
When I run the RGB chase pattern in the test tab in X-Lights, the first column is green, the second is blue, and the third is red.   Not what I was expecting.
I went through and set up some channels and ran some meteors and red is red, green is green, and blue is blue.
It was the test tab that was throwing me off.  Each of the colors worked, just not in the order I was expecting.
Life is good.

Well we don't have names on the slider for a reason.  We have no idea if channel 1 is red the way you have your hardware configured.  There are several things that go into the channel to color mapping.  Different led strings can have different RGB ordering.  You didn't say how the e682 channel ordering was configured but that affects it.  Then when you define the models in xLights you can specify different RGB orders and you didn't mention how you set that either.  The test tab is just raw channels and doesn't care about any of that ordering.  The easiest way to figure out the channel order is to just check the first box for channel 1 and then make it turn on and see what color shows up.

I totally understand.  Sorry I didn't mention the order.   I try to leave everything RGB if I can, and in this case, they are.  Same in Xlights.   My GECE are different, but I was testing some WS2811 chips and Pixa Bulbs.  I was expecting them to respond the same, and in the end, they did.   I was trying to use the test tab to test the output and got confused with the order.
I am still testing new props and configurations, and the test tab is the easiest for me.  I know what to expect moving forward.
Thanks
