Effects Changed and Wondering Why?
« on: October 11, 2015, 04:56:01 PM »
JonB256 had posted his 10 Dalek Trees and Stars and the corresponding files with the sequences. This led me to order 4 Trees and modify his sequence to only have 4 trees instead of 10. The sequences worked great and I was able to add my Globes to this sequence and have them work also.

Here is my question, Jon’s sequence is using grouping on both the trees and the stars. At some point and I don’t recall if I added the Dalek Trees and Stars with the grouping to my other file with my mega tree and other items or not but that xlights_rgbeffects.xml was used in conjunction with Jon’s sequence file. The effects were totally changed and as I looked at the two xlights_rgbeffects files the Dalek trees have totally different PreviewScaleY and PreviewScaleX as well as offsetYpct and offsetXpct values. Can this mess up how the effects work especially when the effects are applied as a group and not to individual items in the group?

My reason for asking is I want to use a lot of Jon's sequence with my megatree and another set of Dalek trees to be run off of another controller.
Thanks for any help, especially since I am totally new to this.

See the thread I posted on how to convert shared xml files to your own layout.

and Kent, since I did that (back in the Spring), the Model Group details I would choose for the Dalek Trees (Boscoyo) would be as Minimal Grid layout. That is the new default. It helps with some of the odd lighting at the edges of my Tree grouping.

Yes most of the effects are going to be impacted by having a different group size.  You probably just need to tweak a parameter or two for each effect that changed.

One thing I found in playing with this is when I added other Dalek Trees which I purchased from James is I didn't realize the size parameter when setting them up and when I went into Notepad ++ and looked at what I had created and what was from Jon I changed things in notepad++ and then the problem went away. What I did is when James did his sale I ordered six more trees for another area of the yard and grouped those into their own group so I have one group of four and one group of six and everything seems to be working OK. If anyone wants to see what I have done I can post the files. I guess the Model Width of 4.2 and Model Height of 15 makes a difference (found in the layout part of the program by clicking on one of the trees). I'm not sure how this affected the way the tree actually worked when plugged into a controller but it did.
Thanks

It's good to know why that size matters.  Model groups are used to create a single model by sampling their position on the layout screen.  So if you resize or move things around it has an impact.  Minimal Grid creates a model that just barely contains all the models whereas the Grid as per preview uses a big 400x400 grid unless you change that value.
