FPP freezing
« on: November 28, 2015, 12:09:57 PM »

I am really having an issue with my FPP freezing or lagging whatever you want to call it. I have attached a link to a short video showing the issue at 5 seconds, 13 seconds and at the end of the video. I have definitely narrowed it down to the FPP. I am running two controllers an F16v2 and a E682, as well as two LOR controllers 16 channels each. Not a very big load considering what some other members are controlling. The FPP was running v1.0. when I ran my show all sequences had a freezing to them.
So I upgraded to v1.5 with a clean install. I used a brand new 16 GB class 4 micro SD and a new 2.0 USB thumb drive for the upgrade.
Got the Pi running and transferred the sequences and mp3 files and made my show again. I was running multicast with 11 universes. Started the show and the freezing was still present. I then changed the settings and went to unicast and made the necessary changes. Ran the show and freezing was still there.
I disconnected the FPP and connected my controllers to my PC and ran nutcracker/xlights and ran some sequences and the RGB ran flawlessly. Did not have the xlights configured for LOR so I did not run them thru xlights. So I ruled out the network and switch.
Went back to the FPP and made a sequence with just my LOR controllers and ran it. The freezing is there. Made a sequence with just my RGB and no LOR data. Ran the sequence and the freezing is there.
Changed the microSD to an 8 GB Class 10 after it was suggested the class 4 may be too slow. Did another clean install and ran some sequences and the freezing is still there.
Where should I go next? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Ed

the only issues i have heard about on the FPP are
1) Power supply is too low an  amperage running rpi. I use 2 amp 5v supply
2) The usb flash card cannot read data as fast as the show runs.

The most expensive flash is not necessary the best. I think i have had good luck with Walmart flash drives.
You should post this question over on www.falconchristmas.com

All the FPP developers are there. The FPP thread has over 16,000 posts. People will have seen this before.

On my FPP i am running 45,000 channels with no lag at all.

here is forum for FPP

good luck

Also check what your log settings are set to. Should not be debug . Use Warn ALL .
Upgrade to 1.6 at least.
Try without the browser on the FP open (So that it does not refresh all the time).
Quite often (including in my case) , the USB was the problem. I got another 8GB one and simply copied the stuff from the previous one over to the new one.

Gerry,

My log was set to info at the time I had the freezing issue. Captain Murdoch had me change to debug to send him
the logs. It is now on Warn.

But here is the odd thing, it was freezing two days ago and tonight I came home from hunting camp
and what do I see but my show running flawlessly. Did not change anything except the log setting.

It does not make sense at all now.

Thanks, Ed

I posted a problem to Falcon... I use media only MP4 files within my show and 2 of them cause the Pi to freeze (one of them is Let It Go..LOL).  These file play great in all media software and the Xlights program.  The only thing they have in common and different from the other sequences/media files is that the title of the file name is ALL CAP's... I will try to make changes  tomorrow morning to see if this is the problem...

Otherwise the Pi is great! no issues!!
