Copy and paste while keeping settings
« on: March 10, 2016, 06:49:00 PM »
Is there a way to copy an effect or multiple effects and keep all of their settings?  I am mainly concerned with the size of the effect.  For example I have an effect that I stretched across multiple timing marks and I want to copy the effect and paste it further in the song so that it keeps it's length and pastes across the same number of timing marks as the original.

Can I do the same copying a number of different effects from one point in the song and pasting it into another.  A lot of songs repeat so I would like to copy a section of the song to paste it again when the chorus repeats.  I would hate to have to recreate it over and over again.

Hi,

Yes . Assuming that you are one of the recent releases , - you can highlight the effects (hold the left mouse key to drag over and highlight the cells ) , then copy , go to where you want it and paste.
Works best if the effects are aligned with a timing mark. I have not tried when there are no timing grids active..

I've tried that but when I paste it the effect only goes into the size of the block I paste it starting in.  I select the cell I want the paste to start in and do a CTRL V to paste and it doesn't keep the size of the source.

No I haven't tried it without timing marks.  I will have to give that a shot.

Thanks!

This might work for you--if you have, for example, three timing marks over which you want to paste the effect you just copied, you can highlight all three timing marks' areas in the sequencer, then when you paste the effect it will "fill up" all three timing marks.   Not 100% on this, but I don't think it matters how "big" or "small" the copied effect is..   I hope this helps.

I personally almost never have cells active when I copy/paste.  That will make sure it pastes with the exact time.  Currently when you select multiple effects it will always paste with the exact same effect lengths.  The only time the effect pastes with a different length is when you are pasting into selected cells AND you are only pasting a single effect.  Eventually there will be paste by cell and paste by time options to give control over it.

I tried with no timing marks and it will not let me paste without any marks.

Gil, if I don't select a cell to start the paste in how does xLights know which row to paste to?  Don't I have to select the place to paste to.

As far as selecting the number of cells to paste to, this is what I am trying to avoid.  I don't want to have to count the number of cells every time i want to copy and paste.

You need to deselect the timing(s). Click the radio button to toggle on/off.

Then click on the grid to paste.

(see video, sorry no sound.  I am doing copy/paste with CTRL-C/V)

When no timing track is active you can click right in the grid at any location and it will select a 1 second region.  The beginning of that region will be the starting point for the effect in the top row of what you are pasting.
