Perspectives - what am I doing wrong?
« on: July 11, 2016, 10:53:21 AM »
I just updated to 2016.40.  I read through the manual about perspectives, maybe I am misunderstanding how it works.
I want to setup 2 perspectives, one for my full setup with the main xlights window spanning my 2 external monitors, and the other for the laptop only when I don't have them connected.
I positioned the main window where I wanted it, then did View-> Perspectives -> Save as  New and called it "full setup".  Then I moved the window over to just my laptop screen and saved it as "laptop only".  I thought that when I switched back and forth between these 2 perspectives that the main window would move accordingly, but nothing happens.  Am I not understanding how this feature works?

I talked with Sean about this.  To accomplish what I want, I need to either create a different view and duplicate my models for the laptop-only setup, or duplicate my show directory and resize the models and the background image there.  Since I have my layout and model changes pretty much done for this year, I think I will try the second option.

Umm you just talked about two totally different things.  The second post has nothing to do with Perspectives.  That is sounding like the steps to create two different Preview windows.

So my question is what type of window were you moving over to the second monitor?  If was an additional Preview window then it's not part of the perspectives.  If its any of the other normal default windows then it should work the way you were attempting to do it.

gil Martin was in the LAYOUT tab, not the SEQUENCER tab. I told him perspectives are not for LAYOUT preview window, it was developed for SEQUENCER tab

This was his issue:
1st machine dual monitors, one of them like 3000x2000 reolution
2nd machine laptop, single monitor say 1400x1000 resolution.

He wants to develop on 1st machine and then go to machine 2 and continue developing. He wants a view that has a huge resolution background on 1st machine and scaled down image for the laptop.

I told him
a) Create two views (both views are of same house). change background images for each view. Now clone all models for 2nd view, same channel range as first. Adjust images and models on laptops.
Now you can share sequences between the two and develop on both.
Downside: Create shadow models for each model and keep them in sync if you change lights on them.
-or-
b) Create a second show directory on the laptop. On that show directory use the lower resolution image and move all models around so they fit lower res image.
Now you can share sequences between the two.
Downside is if you change a model (like add more nodes) you have to remember to make the change in the other show directory

This problem statement is seamlessly switch between a high power desktop machine and a laptop.
resolution of two machines is quite different. We dont have a simple way to do this.

Is there another way to do this?

All the model positions are percentage based so it would only take a couple seconds to just type in a new width and height value in the property grid when you move between machines.  I do it all the time when I switch my setups between machines.
