I have a display element that is controlled with a J1-Sys P2 controller.
Its my Merry Christmas sign.
The word MERRY is 80 pixels long and was defined as Universe 3 (channel 1 thru 240)
The word Christmas is 139 pixels long and was defined as Universe 4 (channel 1 thru 417)
The 2 universes come from the same output and the J1-Sys took care of differing channel configs.

Do I define this as an E1.31 network, Universe 3 240 channels and then another E.131 network, Universe 4 and 417 channels
OR
Do I define it as an E1.31 network (Universe 3&4) using the same output? If so, what do i set the channel count to? I would assume 512x2 and just have to map the pixel nodes when converting form LOR

I think in 2016.43 I understand the use of the "One Output" checkbox now. It appears that it comes into play during the layout phase when setting the Start Channel. There appears to be an option for "Output Number" that corresponds to the physical control that was defined during setup (?) ...

If that is the case then as long as I am not using the "Output Number to define the Layout start channel then does it matter if I define Universe 3 and 4 in one E1.31. setup or separate them into two setups to accommodate the different channel configs .. or .. does it really matter as long as the channel count is large enough to encompass the entire display element?

<bump>

Found another twist in my mapping problem.

The MERRY part of the sign is on Universe 3 and is named MCS 1 thru MCS 80
It seems that the CHRISTMAS part of the is on Universe 4 and is also named MCS 1 thru MCS139

So MCS1 thru MCS80 appear twice in the drop list to map.

As long as you get your start channel correct it won't matter. If you use #u:ch xlights will make sure it goes out correctly.

Keith,

We just crossed replies/updates.
I can certainly update using #u:ch

Can you advise on the LOR mapping?

I also think I am going to have to break up the custom layout into MERRY and CHRISTMAS so I can address the 2 universes. There isn't an individual start channel option in custom layouts.

You don't need individual start channels in custom models because you can type in any numbers you want.  You can skip over 1000 channels in a custom model.  If you type in the number 546 then it will be that many channels offset from the start channel of the model.  Nobody ever said you had to type the numbers in numerical order.

Thank you Keith and Gil. I appreciate the answers.

Just to clarify though....
When using IMPORT (Import Effects) the mapping portion uses the LOR channel names (?)
So the LOR channel names should be unique in that xLights can't distinguish between the name MCS1 in universe 3 (3:1) and MCS1 in universe 4 (4:1)

That's where I am at now.
Unless I am completely missing the boat I need to modify all my sequences that I converting so that LOR channel names for the Merry Christmas sign are unique to create the map correctly.

I was only responding regarding this statement.

Have you tried to do the import with the duplicate names?  If so and you didn't see two names show up then you have your answer.  That's all I would do is try it.  A lot easier than trying to sift through boatloads of import code trying to figure out how it works.
