text sign
« on: August 22, 2014, 12:55:30 PM »
I am a newbie to the world of RGB and pixels. This will be my third year in this wonderful hobby. I have a pixel system 1 (E682 controller)/ I am pretty much a plug and play sort od person. I was told Xlights/Nutcracker was the easiest way to make the moving text sign and could add other effects into my LOR run show. Someone showed me very quickly how to create a sign in Xlights/Nutcracker and then import it into LOR.  I modified my set up and wanted to get the text to be what I wanted.  I cant seems to make it work.

what we did is built a sequence in LOR for just the sign (Originally it was 6 RGB 5050 strips with 50 pixels each they are 2.5 m in length)  We set up 6 CCR devices in LOR.  In XLights/Nutcracker we set up the six E1.31 universes (I think that is what they are called).

I am confused as to what I am doing, are there written instructions of videos helps?

I would like to add the sign and then a 8 to 10 line matrix to do snowflakes and patterns from Nutcracker.

And then how do you copy and paste the sign into the LOR segment. All my segments have been created so I just need to add the rgb sign universes to it.

All help is greatly appreciated.   Thanks

you have 6 flex strips with 50 nodes on them (150 pixels)?
something like a ws2811 flex strip? or do you have LOR ccr's strips?

if you put them out horizontally you will have 6 rows of 50 node each. 6 rows will be somewhat a challenge for showing text, it can work if you scroll the text either up or down.

you do not need to do anything in LOR , you can create the model for this scrolling text display in xlights.

how many non rgb channels do you have in LOR? Are they configured for the LOR protocol or DMX?

You want to get the SETUP set correctly before you go to the NUTCRACKER tab.

scrolling text is tribial as long as you have the SETUP and the model created correctly

Seam Thanks so much.

My display has been simple until this year. It was just 16 LOR channels. For this season I have added 32 LOR channels for a total of 48 LOR channels  also added a DMX eight universe controller for dumb RGB lights. I just purchased the pixel system 1 (uses the E682 and is plug and play) from SanDevices and have 16 2.5m 5050 150 led flex strips.(I believe that makes each strip 50 pixels) I had planned to use 6 for the sign and 10 for a matrix for patterns and effects. It will be laid out horizontally. Since this is the last part of the display I have to do. I think I will make the matrix all 16 strips. Each 2.5m strip has 150 led (50 pixels). The regular LOR channels use that protocol, the DMX is DMX and the Sandevice is E1.31 all of which my version of LOR will run.

I think what I have to do is play with LOR and Xlights more. I was quickly shown how to set up a sequence in LOR for the sign, then migrate it to Xlights. extract the LOR sequence into a Xlights and create it there then export it. I am having trouble with the exporting back to LOR.

SO gar I love xlights.Nutcracker but need to play with it alot more I have only had it two weeks.

if you have 16 flex strips and a e682 i would use all of them on either a matrix or a megatree.

now you get better text and much better effects.

let me know if u need help

Sean --

Thank you so much I will. I am still trying to figure this all out. I have kept it simple the past two years but sort of exploded and have been teased by friends about keeping it simple and I say I am just more elements.

The new plan is to use all 16 2.5m strips horizontally.(and I have no idea what the spacing between strips should be.)  I really don't want to use them for a mega tree since I already have a 10 foot one I built. I like the idea of being able to do the text and patterns effects etc on it. Eventually I want to add video but I will need to play alot with that later as I need to hone my skills with this first.

By the way my RGB strips are such that they could easily all be linked together end to end as they have a female connector on one end and a male on the other but I don't know how that works yet. Likely I could do two together or three because of the channel limited to 510. I believe that would free up several universes for expansion. Still learning.

Again that you so much for you help. I am sure I will have more questions as this develops before showtime.

are your strips 5v or 12v.
end to end doesnt help with the e68 because i think each connector on the e682 is one univers (170 nodes) of lights.

Here is a table showing the 5 main rgb controllers
http://nutcracker123.com/nutcracker/rgb_controllers/

i am using the falcon-16 v1 controller, on the web page is the falcon-16 v2.

the pixlite-16 and the falcon-16 can drive two universe (340 nodes) from one connector. all the others are one universe per connection.

i think the e682 is probably the most used controller of any of them.
