Timing Marks for "Most Wonderful Time of the Year"
« on: September 28, 2014, 12:22:34 AM »
I have tried to use various functions of audacity to set timing marks for "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" yet have been unsuccessful so far in setting marks that make sense to me.  I have tried a couple different note onsets, beat tracker, etc but haven't gotten one that made sense yet.  I have tried 3, 4, 6, & 12 beats per bar and none of these provided timings that I like.  The song seems to have a "1-2-3-4-5-6" beat so I figured 3/6/12 would work, but they don't look right.  I have also tried the timings attached to the XL/NC folders without finding one that works for me.  Does anyone have a timing file they would be willing to share for this one?  Thanks in advance.

the best markups are the ones that u do manually.

listen to the song and type Ctl-B at the right spots. most songs should only have 20-30 markups if you are doing effects on RGB models.

i have never played with the settings for note onsets, bars .etc. If i dont get a god markup, i do it manually.

Post the link to amazon for your song and i will mark it up for you and then include it in the songs directory.

Sean:  Thanks for the reply.  Let me mark this baby up then I will post the xml file.  How's that sound?  Probably tomorrow night.  The version I am using is the one done by Andy Williams and it is actually from one of the two Time-Life Christmas music CDs.

And I was looking forward to the "god" markup.  Damn those touch keyboards.  Have you seen this website?

I agree with Sean, for a song with any complexity its usually best to just do the markup manually. If the song is simpler the key onset works ok. I usually just do the beat automatically and do the rest by hand. A very helpful feature is in the top right of the Audacity window, it's a scale that let's you slow down the playback. You can set a quick key (ctrl-space for me) that will trigger the"play at speed" option. Makes picking out details a lot easier.

Thanks for the replies!  I will probably try tomorrow night.

Do I need to have the cursor staring in the row where the beat tracks usually reside?  Or does it matter?  I tried some real quick tonight and all I got were a bunch of 0.000 timings...  Thanks!

Place cursor over the place in the wave form where you wish the timings to be. Pressing control b will place a timing mark in another track below the wave form. Press the up arrow to return the action to the wave form. Space bar will start play at that point. Pause at the place in the wave form (fine tune) where you want your next change in the music then press control b and another timing mark will appear. repeat as needed.

Thanks to everyone.  I have made good headway on this one but I need a bit more time to get it where I want it.  Once I get there I will post the xml file that I come up with.

you might also post the audacity label file containg the timings., this way if people are starting from scratch they have your timing marks. both would be nice

Would be glad to do that.  I thought that would be duplication of the xml files...  Certainly!!
