adding 5 meter 60/20 WS2811 strips
« on: December 10, 2016, 12:42:41 PM »
I have a pixel mega tree with sixteen, 50s pixel per string working.
Now,  I put up three, 5 meter, 60 pixel per meter / 20 IC's per meter strips on the eve.
I'm not sure I have the setup right.
My math says that I should have 2700 new channels. Is this correct?

Mega tree = 16 x 50 x 3 = 2400 existing channels
Eaves = 3 x 5 x 60 x 3 = 2700 new channels

It is a little confusing to me. Right now I have it set up on 20 IC's per meter which equals 300 channels. And then I got thinking that it might not be right even though all the LEDs are are following the mega tree pattern.

ok lets start with what you have
   10 ic per meter
   5  meters per strip
   16 strips in the tree

  10 x 5 = 50 ic per strip     ( being a strip could be 300 LEDs per strip)
  50 x 16 = 800 ic chips in the tree
   3 x 800  2400 channels    3 channels per chip

now you are adding 3 strips 5 meters long with 20 ic per meter  (Don't care how many LEDS)
   20 x 5 = 100 ic chips per strip
   3 x 100 = 300  total chips for the 3 strips
   3 x 300 = 900 channels    3 per chip.

remember each IC is running 3 LEDs  number of LEDs does not matter as the channels are only running ICs  I have some IC that are running 6 LEDS in disk format.

Both my math and babybear's math could be right or both could be wrong.  Depends on the type of chip. Are these 2811, 2812 or 180x or what?

Man! I spent 30 minutes trying to post a photo. anyway, yes they are WS2811 chips.

So, guess we narrowed it down to 900 channels total for the three strips.

Now I am going to post a New Topic.

thank you for the help, I have it setup and working now.

But I have not been using Xlights since 2014 and I am using latest version which is some what difficult to use.  I didn't get to set up a show t season.  Even though I do have some effects going in a sequence the strips aren't in a model of their yet. gotta keep at it to learn it.
thanks
