Star Model Using Rectangle Modules
« on: January 15, 2017, 11:17:37 PM »
My plan for 2017 is to have a megatree with something similar to this on top:  http://www.holidaycoro.com/product-p/124.htm. If you click on the second image, you can see the layout of the rectangle modules, but I plan to also to add 5 rectangle modules to the middle to light up the dark spot there.

I was experimenting with the Star Model on xLights to draw the model, and it became quickly apparent that the it's designed for pixels sitting on corners of the star rather than rectangles on the sides of each star. The Arch Model has functionality similar to what I'm looking for; my arches are run using AC Controllers with 8 segments apiece, so I have the Lights Per Node attribute set to 5 to make my arches look like, well, arches, rather than 8 dots in a half circle. It would be nice if I can specify 3 Lights per Node for my star (like a rectangle module), so my inner star would be represented by 15 dots in a star shape, the next star would be represented by 30 dots (3 x 10), the next by 60 dots (3 x 20), and the outside by 90 dots (3 x 30).

I suppose that the mathematics/algorithm would be designed to "detect" that if you have anything other than 1 for Lights Per Mode, it would lay out the dots on the screen to show the perimeter of the star as being lined with pixels or rectangle modules?

The reason lights per node can be greater than 1 is because its used to represent dumb rgb so we don't change the math on how to distribute the pixels.  If the built in model doesn't work for you then that's why we have the custom model feature and you draw whatever you need.

Yes, but the Star model doesn't include the Lights Per Node option like the Arches model does. I was suggesting that it could be added on to provide similar channel control as Arches.

I know that I can create a custom model; in fact, I have already done it for a few small coro stars which have a "weird" layout.

P.S. I also noticed that if I create a Star with only 5 nodes, only 4 dots appear on my screen.
