Reset of window positions
« on: October 02, 2017, 07:45:00 PM »
When moving xLights sequences from one computer to another, with different viewing options (as in # of screens), the windows such as the house preview or model preview sometimes get "lost".  They are actually in screen space that does not exist on the second computer.

It has been suggested to use the /w (wipe) switch to bring everything back in line.  Apparently (or at least during the 5 different attempts to make this work) the screen locations are NOT changed.  Quite a few items are, just not the screen location.

I request a method to reset the windows to the 0,0 location on the current primary screen.  Perhaps one that does not wipe out the remainder of the settings, just the location of the window within the screen.

Thank You

I always do both "Reset to Defaults" and "Dock All" under View -> Windows and that seems to do it.  What you really need to do is create a Perspective for each machine then it's just a double-click to reset the windows to how you want them on each machine.

The "Dock All" works.

Do perspectives stay with the sequence, the show directory, or the installation of xLights?

Well, I answered one of my own questions.

When I copy the show directory from one computer to the other, and then open it in the second machine, the perspective I put together for the second machine is gone.  Apparently the perspective is not maintained for the machine.

I'll try to find a way to create the perspective in the first machine that will work in the second.

In any case, I'm one step closer to making this dual machine setup work.

Thank you.

The perspectives should be saved in the xlights_rgbeffects.xml file.   You need to make sure you've saved that on exit.  You can open that file and see your saved perspectives in a section at the bottom.

Wasn't there a feature that was recently added, so that the setup you are using on each computer is retained by default at exit?  That way if you go from a laptop to a dual monitor PC, you aren't having to change perspectives.  I think it works on any sequence too, in case you are opening some from others.

If that was a feature I don't believe we would have this post.

I solved the problem by following all the above to get the windows redocked and then placed where I want them on the second computer's 2 screens.  I then saved that perspective ("Upstairs Dual Monitor").

I found that perspective in the xlights_rgbeffects.xml on that second computer.  I copied just that perspective to my first computer's xlights_rgbeffects.xml file, placing it at the end of the perspective settings' area.

Now when I copy the subdirectory from the first computer to the second, I can open the perspectives on the second and choose the dual monitor version.  I am hopeful moving from the second to the first will also work.

Thanks for the hints and the help.  This should solve the problem of going back and forth since the perspective for each machine is in both copies.

Must have been something Keith was talking about adding but hasn't done yet, or I misunderstood him talking about.
