not keen on the new icons for Saving
« on: January 22, 2018, 03:19:09 AM »
appreciate that you guys are experimenting with a new look for xlights, but not so keen on the new Save and Save As icons:

Save down arrow a) doesn't make much sense (to me) and b) being opposite to the up arrow, which is Open, would indicate it's an opposite function eg  Close, but isn't

Save As curved arrow looks like the undo-redo arrow on 99.9% of other programs.

Some may say it's boring that all icons for a particular function look similar in most software, but there's a good reason for that - familiarity. Helps everyone, particularly new users, easily find the icon to do the task they need.

BTW, whilst you guys are playing with icons, is there any chance we could get a Close icon on the tool bar?
I know just enough to be dangerous :0

Actually if you search the term "save file icons" and choose images you will find a lot with down arrows many which are blue.  Same with "open file icons" you will find a lot with up arrows that are green.  Personally I wanted different file icons but the examples I created were not used.  Like this attachment was my suggestion for sequence open.  The problem is this looks great at this size but shrink it down to the 20 pixel size on a toolbar and it doesn't look as good.

Save As curved arrow looks like the undo-redo arrow on 99.9% of other programs.

Actually the undo operation usually points to the left or shows a counter clockwise direction.  The curved arrow to the right is still the same concept as the old icon except now it's in the context of a document instead of a disk.

I was looking at the new Icons after I downloaded 2018.3.  While I agree that the 'save' and 'save as' could be more consistent with other programs, I figure if I could learn the multitude of new features the team comes up with on an almost weekly basis, then I can learn to use 2 new Icons.......... :o
