Play stops working if the program sits for a few minutes
« on: March 14, 2018, 12:51:36 PM »
I noticed in .6 and 7 that if I am in the middle of programming a sequence and then stop for about 15-20 minutes and come back to my Mac that I can no longer play a track. I can still add effects and mess with stuff but when I hit play to play it nothing happens. It looks like it is trying to play because you can see the FPS start to show what its running at but thats it, no audio and no movement like you can see in this video

You should goto Tools -> Package Log Files and post the zip file whenever you report any issue unless you are providing a crash zip file which already contains the log.

My best guess is your Mac is having audio device problems. In that 15 minutes does your audio device go to sleep and disconnect. If it does you would get exactly that behaviour.

I don't physically detach any headphones or anything and the Mac doesn't go to sleep, my timeout is like an hour or more before anything would go to sleep

Ok but my observation remains. If your os is putting your audio device into some standby state this will happen. You likely would never even know it happened and native apps may handle those events better than we can with our cross platform code base.

Does reopening the sequence help or do you have to close xLights and restart.

closing and reopening the sequence does not help, you have to completely close XLights and reopen then it is fine

As a test (which we know is the issues) I unplugged my USB headphones and plugged them back in and it causes the issue to happen if you wanted to try and reproduce it easily.

It doesn’t happen in windows so I can’t reproduce it.

Hey Keith this sounds very much like the problem I had last year when switching from headphone and speaker. There is a definitely a problem in the Apple OS with the sound management because it effects other programs as well.

When my MAC comes out of sleep I have the same issue. I have noticed that if I let the sequence play for 10-15 seconds the sound comes back. During this time xlights plays back at double speed (no sound) until the issue corrects itself.  Have you tried leaving it playing back for 10-20 seconds - the youtube clip looks like its only a few seconds of play back.
