1st is there a way to stop the sequene from playing when i select an effect. and 2 I have a few effects that turn on in preview early when the sequence is running for example I have 10 strings of single color icicles across the eve and 2 sections will turn on with the section before them then blink when it is their turn to turn on. any ideas?

No its actually designed to allow you to select an effect and make changes while it's playing.  Just hit the spacebar or click the stop button.  I'm sure effects are turning on by some effect in your sequence.
