Xlights Folder Organization
« on: January 17, 2019, 08:27:26 AM »
Hey guys. I’m about to start moving my sequences over to a new 2019 folder and I’m realizing what a mess I created last year. Can someone recommend a folder structure that plays nice with xlights and makes importing/exporting sequences easy?  My current structure has audio in one place, sequences in another, etc.  Its a mess.

Personally I like everything under the Show folder.  I like to create a subdirectory for every sequence and it will contains all images, audio, sequence files, FSEQ output for that sequence.  I tried using a common audio folder and got tired of having to navigate to it.  So if I use the same sequence for 6 years and have 6 copies of the audio who cares.  And if I want to trim 2 seconds off the audio the file is matched to that sequence and screwing up any other place I've used that file.

Makes sense. I too was also having to always navigate back to the audio file. Seems best to keep everything contained within the sequence folder. Thanks!

If your folder structure is currently a mess, you can go to Tools/Cleanup File Locations.  That should pull anything that is outside of your show directory into the show directory, so that it is easier to copy, move, or share.

Is cleanup file locations only for a sequence?  When I clicked on it nothing appears to happen, but I do not have a sequence open.  Are there any messages or warning about what it is about to do or what it did?  I am also starting to move things around for 2019.  I keep all the downloaded sequences in separate folders while I look at them in there original author form, but once I import them they just go in my seasonal folder with all the others that I am actually using or planning to use.

I still prefer a separate media folder...   I can open open show folders and shared sequences and such that I download and as long as the media filename matches, it automatically finds it.   Don't need to go off and find it.

Yeah...I guess I am more specifically asking should I create separate folders under my show folder for each sequence and keep all associated media in those OR should I keep each type of media in its own folder...audio, images...

Option 1:

2019
     > Christmas
           > Jingle Bell Rock
                    .jpeg
                    .mp3
                    .fseq
           > Grinch
                    .jpeg
                    .mp3
                    .fseq

Option 2:

2019
     > Christmas
           > Sequences
                    .fseq
                    .fseq
           > Audio
                    .mp3
                    .mp3
           > Images
                    .jpeg
                    .jpeg

If its under the show folder it's fine either way so you choose what you like.  I personally want to know if I want a sequence from last year all I do is copy one folder.
