The more I look at this I think I might have a go at one. Im thinking of using 1/2" White shark-bite pex with strip lights. Ill have to model it up first in xlights see if it does what I would like. I have found the shark bite brand defuses light the best.

It would be a challenge but I could model that with a PolyLine in 3D layout mode.

Thanks Gil.

So the wireframe will be 5/16” steel rod. What are opinions of using zip ties versus buying pixel clips?  I will have about 500 pixels to get on there.  If pixel clips, where do you buy?

Alright...my fingers are sore from too many zip ties!  Overall, this went pretty smoothly but made my head hurt for a while trying to figure out how to model this thing.  I was able to use virtual strings in the controller in order to build in two halves and still use the overlaid sphere models in lights.  I also ended up creating submodels in order to deal with the intersection of the two sphere models.

A couple things I ran into:
1. I had to use zig zags in the controller as lights does not have that wiring option for the sphere.  Not a problem, but maybe that could be an add.  Other than the physical shape, I think this model could follow the same rules as the tree model or matrix.  It is really the same from a wiring standpoint.

2. I haven't been able to rotate the model in xlights to match my physical orientation.  The model does not seem to rotate the way I enter the X,Y and Z degrees.  Also, when you start to rotate on multiple axis, it really begins to behave strangely.  For example, depending on how I rotate the model, effects sometimes do not render at all in with the "Per Preview" option.

3.  Overall, the "Per Preview" view on this model does not render correctly.  The effects are following the physical wiring versus how the model looks in 2D in xlights.  For example, if I want to do a whole house effect and run the bars effect across the house, the sphere model just runs lights from pole to pole instead of taking into account the way the model looks on the screen.

I'm excited to use this in my display.  You can really do some cool effects using the single strand model in different ways.  Here is a photo of the wired model.  I'll post a video shortly once I figure out how.

Very nice.  I was wondering about loading the pixels on the inside of the wireframe, but they look just fine.

Of course you do know that we will have to go back and re-evaluate what we are doing - now don't you?  :| :o
