Overwrite Media Tags

What does the Overwrite Media Tags box do when checked?  This is on the Info/Media tab of the Settings Menu.

I know that when exporting an audio file from Audacity to an .mp3, the LAME process adds a few frames of dead air, thus making the audio file longer than the.aup file in Audacity.

Does this checkbox eliminate that?

It just causes xlights to ignore the mp3 tags and use data from the sequence xml file.

Keith,

What does one gain or lose by checking or not checking that box?  Do you have an example for each case?

ID3 tags are simply a property of an .mp3 file which contain information about the artist, album, year of release, and other metadata. It's how .mp3 players and media libraries identify and sort .mp3 files.

In xLights, the option to overwrite them won't change your music or your sequence. There's no good reason to overwrite media tags, but there's also not a super solid reason not to.

I didn't know that use of .wav in xLights was up on GitHub and available for testing.  So that is where I am headed and if it works, I will never use another mp3 file.

My original post was pointed at the fact that when converting an existing .wav file or even rendering an Audacity .aup work file to an .mp3 for xLights, that the process adds a few frames to the beginning and end of a song; thus making it longer in length.

I projection map my whole house.  So lining up video and audio is a big deal for me..  Also, I program each song independently for speed purposes, then go back and string sequence to sequence and make one continuous 18 minute file.  It's those extra frames that have caused me much grief and time over the last 4 years in which I have done this.

I was hoping "ignore" also meant "omit". but now I know it does not mean that.

Anyway, I am hoping the now available use of .wav will save me some time.  Thank you taking time to reply.

Xlights has opened wav files for at least the last 4 years. They open slightly faster but otherwise there is no difference.

There are no extra mp3 frames as you say. That sounds like observed guesswork. If you want you video and lights aligned you either have xlights/fpp play it or you use timecode. Anything else is guaranteed to be wrong.

The very latest updates to FPP will work with WAV files
xLights has supported them for a long time.
