new HD transfer issue
« on: April 28, 2020, 11:27:28 AM »
Hello,

I just replaced one data/program (non OS) hard drive in my PC with a bigger one and planed on copying over the xlights folder and all contents with it.  I have always had it setup so that the USB drive was the show folder so that I could just swap the USB stick between computers when editing.  I had been using version 2019.66 but when I transferred the files over and went to update xlights I kept getting a permission denied error.  I then just did a clean install of the latest version right on the new HD and defined my show file as the normal.  The problem I am having now is that the layout view shows correct and even displays the elements correctly if I load and play a sequence but the controller (setup) tab is missing all my settings.  I tried to copy the network xml file to a test folder and define that as the show folder but same issue.  When I put the USB in my laptop running 2019.66, everything shows up and seems to work great including the controllers tab.  The bad thing now is that when I put the old drive back in my PC and try running xlights from that drive, I get the same bad issue for some reason of no controller setup showing.  I'm wondering if its an issue from when i went to update to the latest version but didn't have enough HD space so I cancelled update and got a new HD.  Any suggestions as to what file I need to copy where to get my controller/network settings to update with my new install?  I'm using a falcon f16v3 and FPP on a pi so if it's easier, I could try somehow to import the file from the FPP if that's even possible or if the file is actually kept in the xlights install location and not the show folder, I could just copy and paste it from my one PC to the other.   I had thought the network file in the show folder was the one it went off of but I must be wrong because it works on one computer and not another with the same show folder defined.  Thanks for any help!!!

UPDATE:  so after reading some of the threads since I've been absent for a bit, I realized it may have to do with the update and not the hard drive transfer.  I uninstalled the latest version completely and put on 2019.74 and all is well again.  Any idea what version I'll be ok to update too without losing my setup or having it changed??

Create an empty sequence. Save it. The use tools package sequence and post it and we can take a look at why it didn?t upgrade automatically.

Thank you Keith! It seems (wait for it..) that I think the error is on my part.  I need to read and watch more to learn this new controllers tab.  On the left it only says "layout" but has 1-66 as universes (which seemed initially to mean it deleted all my individual listings that used to show up) which is correct and then in the box on the bottom right, there seems to be all my stuff so I think I just need to step back and educate myself and then see if there really is an issue. I'll keep you posted and thank you again.

ok so after watching and reading everything, I still think I may have an issue.  My layout is that I have universe 1 setup for my 3 LOR boxes.  I have 1 Falcon f16v3 controller using two differential expansion cards which go to a total of 8 differential receiver cards.  I run this using FPP on a Pi3B+ with all channels operating under multicast.  Under the new controllers tab, it just shows 1 listing named "layout" that I had before for my LOR boxes (universe 1) but shows 1-66 universes and the channel numbers.  On the right it shows all the elements to my layout but the visualizer shows the names on the right but nothing in the big boxed area.  Also, on the LAYOUT tab, it shows the elements as before with channel numbers as start and end numbers but controller comm is blank.  I used absolute numbering when I set these up.  Ive attached the file as you suggested but just wonder what I'm doing wrong.  Can I still run it in multicast with just the f16 and expansion/receiver cards as well as the output to the LOR boxes?

If you dont set the port then it wont put it on the left hand side.

thank you.  sorry for all the questions but I've read the manual, the posts and watched the videos but still just confused with this whole thing.  My main question I guess is if I have 3 LOR controllers being run from the F16, and the f16 with 2 expansion cards and 8 receiver cards, how many controllers should I see listed on the controller list?  Right now I only see everything lumped under that one "controller".  I'm thinking it may be easier just to delete it and start all over with the controller list?

my other confusion is that its easy enough to define the port for the pixels on the layout tab, but would the protocol be ws2811 since that's the type of pixels I use?  I do have some arches using INK1003 strips that are defined in the f16 as ws2811 so I'm assuming I would also use the 2811 protocol for these in the layout tab as well?  Also, if I select the LOR protocol, what is the correct port number to use since I just run them daisy chained off the f16 serial port.
