Were there changes to nested groups?
« on: September 12, 2020, 01:07:58 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I haven't used Xlights since last Christmas and I just updated to the latest version however my models in groups are not showing on the Preview in the Layout tab?

Has something changed in Xlights since Dec 2019 where nested groups are not supported?  An example how I used the nesting is as follows

I will have a group called "Group - Fence"
within that Group I will more groups called "Group - Fence Top Row", "Group - Pickets Only" ,etc.. In which these groups contain sub models of the models themselves.

Ex.

Group - Fence
--- Group - All Pickets
------ Fence-1 - Pickets Submodel
------ Fence-2 - Pickets Submodel
------ Fence-3 - Pickets Submodel
--- Group - Small Pickets
------ Fence-1 - Small Pickets Submodel
------ Fence-2 - Small Pickets Submodel
------ Fence-3 - Small Pickets Submodel
--- Group - Tall Pickets
------ Fence-1 - Tall Pickets Submodel
------ Fence-2 - Tall Pickets Submodel
------ Fence-3 - Tall Pickets Submodel

I have tried seaching to see I can find release notes that talk about a change to this but don't see anything.

I have attached the files I think you need.  Let me know if I missed any.

I put a couple screen shots of my example.

The first screen shot (Nestedgroups.jpg)
When I select the "Model - Halloween" group it would show all my models on the preview. However it only show the one model which isn't in a group.

The second screen show show that I have models within the nested groups however they don't show either when I select them.

I just checked with your layout and there is nesting of groups there. What exactly are you not seeing?

The models are showing in the nested groups however none of the models in the groups show up on the preview layout on the right.  Only the one model which is not in a group is showing.

Looks like you are using previews .. do a check sequence you may find some messages about some models being in default and hence being shown etc ... Need to be consistent with which previews you are using on the models etc.

Models will only show up on the previews you assign them to.  Just change the Preview to "All Models" and you can see everything.

I have the groups setup for the preview they are included in.. However when I change the model it adds a copy of the model to the root of list as well as in the group.

I included how this functionality used to work..  I have added two screen shots showing the exact same thing but one is from version 2019.24 and the other is from 2020.38.

In the 2019.24 version it shows the models on the preview when they are still set to default but the group is set to the preview.   So this must have changed or was a bug that was working in my favour.

I will just have to adjust how I set up my groups and models.

Your right someone broke it between 2020.23 and 2020.24.  My guess would be the huge checkin to allow selections in the list on the left.  I argued we didn't really need that feature and this is the side effect it breaks my masterpiece...lol.
