Best way to temporarily mount stuff through shingles?
« on: September 30, 2021, 10:30:43 AM »
Any ideas? I have a large matrix that will stand vertically on a pitched roof. It?s heavy and no way for it to be free standing. Current plan is to just screw through my mounting brackets, through shingles and into wood below then fill the holes after the holidays are over. Don?t love this idea though?

If your roof pitch is not too steep, sandbags may work........

A matrix will be like a big wind sail on the roof so you need to account for the forces it will experience.  I'd have framing that attaches to the top and bottom of the matrix.  You didn't say how close to top it will be but if you can have a frame that contours to the angle of the roof as it angles down both directions.  Then you can place sandbags on the framing on both sides of the top of the roof.

I have done roofing in the past during my construction days. Best way to avoid an leak issues is to have some metal brackets made that are bend, use a heat gun to heat up the shingle then life it up, place your bracket under the tile, screw it down, then place the shingle back down. this will prevent any holes from being placed in the shingles.

I mount a Merry Christmas sign on my roof and since I'm in AZ we have clay tiles so there is no drilling through shingles...lol.  I have 3 metal frames that span over the contour of the peak and then a 50lb sandbag holds it down on each side.  All the letters are mounted in L shaped aluminum with square aluminum uprights to slide down into the steel upright frames.  Then I attach 2 cables at the top of each frame point so I have 3 going to the back of the house and 3 to the front.  I designed J shaped steel braces that mount underneath the eave and then curve up above the shingle with an eyelet to hold the cable and keep it from touching the roof.  Kinda of a pain to setup.

I use binder clips under the edges of shingles on both the top and bottom sides of a prop.  I have also just use paracord from the ridge vent to the props.  And if it is standing up and catches the wind you want it braced with a lot of weight (sandbags or bags of small pebbles).
