Shifting models from show directories??
« on: June 08, 2015, 02:38:56 AM »
I have some models that I want to move from one display to another.

I created separate indoor and an outdoor displays. Now I want to swap some of the outdoor models into the indoor  display and visa-vera.

Also if we get someones effects how can we "merge" them?

Hi,
Just to clarify, you are looking to import the models with the effects that were defined in another sequence , correct ? Ie a kind of Import xml ?

Hi, I guess in the end the following applies....
 a) it is easy to build an effect in xL from the drop-down list and b) if I have a custom model I just use the Excel file and recopy and paste it c) if someone has a custom model they can share the Excel spreadsheet.

Infact I have just been playing around and there is a function already to copy the layout of a custom model already within xL Model/modify. There is my answer.

Mmmm very easy in the end. Just opened two xL4s on different screens and copied the model layout from one and created a new model in the other the pasted it to the custom model.

I saw in the release notes a couple of release ago , that one could now import xml and the import effects function has xlights sequence (xml) as an option ... but have not tried that as yet ..

Hi Gerry. Just tried it but that is effects onto existing models not the models themselves but that is very useful as I want the same Singing Trees and songs in both shows. Wonderful thank you.

So it sounds like we shouldn't do the one issue request we had where someone complained about being able to open a second instance of XL4.  They wanted it to be a single instance app.  Just can't please everyone. ;)

Don't you already have that ability?

I'm agreeing, not requesting.

I agree too - as long as you can open more than one sequence at a time , whether in the same instance of xlights or another , that is most useful. However , (not sure if it is already there cause I aint about to try) , some protection to prevent a user from accidentally having the same seq open twice and corrupting it (or the other xlights xml files) would be nice to have.

I like (and use) multiple copies of xlights to quickly move effects from sequence to sequence. While the suggestion above is laudable, I would rather the dev team spend time on other things. Frequent backups, as Sean has pointed out many times, should be part of any xlights work flow. It has certainly saved my b**t a few times :)
