Question on the import options
« on: October 02, 2015, 05:44:35 PM »
Sean showed the 2 import options last night.  The one in the wizard imports the data stream and is rotatable as the data file changes.  However the data isn't editable.  The second one is after you've created a file and do an import matching strings to models.  It converts effects and effects are editable.  Does the second import type catch the changes as well or would you  have to re-import if changes were made?  In the first scenario how are models matched to the data since you don't interact when or are they not visible at all in the first scenario?

Data layer imports:  The data does not update when the source file is changed unless you specially command it by hitting the ReImport button.  This data is not associated with any models its a pure channel dump.

Import Effects:  The effects do not update when the original file is changed and if you want to pull in changes xLights has no idea which effects came with the file originally versus ones you added later so it's not going to delete and update the original effects.  I don't even know how it handles it if you import the same file twice.  You either end up with duplicates and possible a mess with effects on top of each other.  This is really meant to be a bring it into xLights and leave the inferior sequencer behind operation. :)

Jedi,

If you had to re-import , delete all the effects from the model first - ie zoom out , select  the model line , delete and then save.

So with data layer...it won't show on the Layout view...However all the data with channels will dump into the fseq file when the XL4 seq is rendered....correct....so I need to be sure of channels when I setup for a data layer being brought in...so a renard numbered 1 through 24 will be mapped to a renard device.

".it won't show on the Layout view", not exactly true.

If you make models that match the channels that you had in lor, lms, hls, vixen. Put those models on your house in LAYOUT, drag them where you need them. Then while in layout if you press play your imported data will show on those models.

When Matt Brown created the LAYOUT preview in 2012 he wanted his AC channels from LOR to show in the LAYOUT (used to be called PREVIEW in XL3).

I describe teh difference between importing data to a data layer and importing data into a sequence file at around 1:23:00 into this video. https://vimeo.com/141135894

What is correct is the imported data layer will NOT show in the SEQUENCER tab.

It will show IF there is a model on the layout screen that matches the channel number.

Do you really mean Layout?  That's the tab where you draw the models not the sequencer grid.  The layout tab shows everything that's been rendered to the sequence when you playback a sequence.  When you're not playing back all you see if models.  If you really mean Sequencer tab then yes the data is shown no matter what you just need to know where to look.  Data layer data will show up at the node level if you double click your models to expand then down into nodes.  But you must have rendered to see the data.  It will not be editable.
