Model Preview vs House Preview
« on: April 08, 2016, 07:34:55 AM »
xlights 2016.17
I'm getting strange behavior, and it's probably because I don't understand things.  I Drew a tree and star in my layout.   In the sequencer, I did an "edit display elements" to get a layer for each in the sequencer.   Whenever I turn on the star, there is a line of lights from the star to the bottom of the tree.  I guessed that there is some option to turn this on/off.  Don't see it.   Also noticed that clicking on "type" or "starting location" immediately causes it to crash.   In addition, can someone explain what the difference is between the "model," "House", and list of "display elements."  The "house" seems self-explanatory.  When I do a tree & star for example, I see both in the house preview, but see a big green row of lights in the model preview, even though I am doing everything in white.

I just went back to a non-beta version & am observing the same kind of weirdness.  For example:   Create a tree, add a star on top.   Add serveral "on" effects to make the star pulse to the beat of the music.   Add a "snow" effect to the tree.   The star stops pulsing when the snow is occurring.  Remove the "snow" effect, and the "on" effects are still there for the star track, but don't work anymore.

please make a movie (screencastomatic or jing), maybe 30-60 secs long. Whole House models work fine in all teh versions I have tried so it must be a misunderstanding.

Forexample your Whole house Model group should be first in the view you create in the SEQUENCER tab to render correctly.

Further 2016.17 had a number of crash points, these were fixed in 2016.18

Sean - Are there any tutorials on Layers interacting with Whole House vs Regular models? Or are layers only applied at the individual model level?

The crash you describe was fixed so you need version 2016.18.  It sounds like you have channel overlapping between some of your models.  Models render top to bottom so in the Master View you need to make sure the Whole House model is first.  Use "Edit Display Elements" to move them up or down.

Okay, so here is the simplest example I can come up with.   I rolled back to the latest "stable" release.  In the video, I launch the application, add a tree and star, start a new sequence, tap out a few beats of the music, and add "on" effects for the star.  As you see from the video, the lights just flicker constantly.  Obviously, I am missing something big.

I see a few problems.  One is that you didn't create any channels on the setup tab.  Didn't you see the warning popup every time you created a model saying you were extending past your number of allocated channels?  You should switch to 2016.18.  With that version you would be able to do it that way because we automatically allocate dummy channels now allow you to sequence before you've defined your network setup.  I also see that you left both models starting at channel 1 which would have caused the star to overlap the first 150 channels of the tree.
